Lying Aside Im a Good Catch When Marriage Becomes A Ponzi ...

by Journalist, under NEWS

Recently while reconnecting with an old college buddy, we found ourselves on the topic of relationships. He has been married over 20 years and has engaged in extramarital affairs the entire time. I told him I have a habit of declining the advances of married men because morality aside, I recognize that I would be dissatisfied in such a relationship.
?Why?? he wanted to know.
I explained that the idea of deception being a prerequisite to being with someone is a turnoff. Secondly, my needs for freedom, flexibility, and access in a relationship would be difficult to meet in such an arrangement. Not to mention the fact that I also have a great respect for woman?s intuition and believe that very few wives with straying husbands remain unaware for long, and I am disinterested in dramatics, conflict or being a party to unnecessary heartache. And yes, I do believe the laws of karma make it impossible to build my happiness on top of another person?s unhappiness. When I finished my list of reasons, my college buddy burst out laughing.
?Girl, your standards are too high! Women are facing a choice and they are asking themselves: Do I want to have no man? Do I want a no-good man? Or do I want a piece-of-a-good-man??
Never mind his comments about my standards, I was curious to know what measuring device he was using to hold himself up as a ?good man!? To his mind, his ability to maintain employment that pays him a salary above the national average coupled with his conviction that he knows how to treat a woman with respect makes him a good man. Seriously, does he really believe lying is a sign of respect? Clearly the women in his life are all willing to settle for their share of this man; he is part-time-good-man to his wife and a-piece-of-a-good-man to all of the others.
His definition of a ?good man? includes willfully lying, cheating, and as a matter of habit, practicing duplicity and all manner of deceptive means for achieving his objectives. Now, I am all for people doing what makes them happy, however, I do find it interesting that someone over the age of 21, who is finally free from the threat of ?getting in trouble? from Mommy or Daddy, chooses lying as a means to get what they want, and yet holds themselves up as a good person.
While I do not necessarily equate monogamy with fidelity and I do believe it is possible to be loyal, trustworthy and committed in a relationship that is non-monogamous, the questions that beg to be asked are: Why get married in the first place? Why promise monogamy, and then ?Bernie-Madoff? your way through the marriage defrauding the people you profess to love, while deliberately doing the opposite of what you promised? What is the value of this behavior? Why is marriage so compelling even when one finds its ground rules running in opposition to his or her natural inclinations?
Marriage as an institution is a failure in its efforts to morph from its original secular intention as a business arrangement designed to protect the family name, property and other interests, into the most common societal expression of love and fidelity.

U.S. shuts 16 sports piracy websites pre-Super Bowl (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Three days before Super Bowl XLVI, U.S. prosecutors said they seized 16 websites that illegally streamed live sports and pay-per-view events over the Internet, and charged a Michigan man with running nine of those websites.

According to the government, the 16 websites provided links to give viewers easy access to other sites that hosted pirated telecasts from the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment Inc ("WWE") and TNA Impact Wrestling. The latter is also broadcast on Viacom Inc's Spike TV.

Prosecutors said such piracy costs leagues and broadcasters millions of dollars a year, and some of this cost is passed on to ticket buyers and sports network subscribers.

"These websites and their operators deprive sports leagues and networks of legitimate revenue" in what amounts to "virtual thievery," said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan, who announced the website seizures.

The websites are firstrow.tv, firstrowsports.com, firstrowsports.net, firstrowsports.tv, hq-streams.tv, robplay.tv, soccertvlive.net, sports95.com, sports95.net, sports95.org, sportswwe.net, sportswwe.tv, sportswwe.com, xonesports.tv, youwwe.com and youwwe.net.

As prosecutors announced the seizure on Thursday, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, expected to start in Sunday's Super Bowl against the New York Giants, admitted to reporters his own use of an illegal website.

"Last year, you know, I was rehabbing my foot, you know, in Costa Rica, watching the game on an illegal Super Bowl website," he said in a video posted Thursday on the NFL website. "And now I'm actually playing in the game. So it's pretty cool."

"MAKE A DEAL"

The defendant charged in the case is Yonjo Quiroa, 28, who faces one count of criminal infringement of a copyright.

Prosecutors said Quiroa, also known as Ronaldo Solano, operated his websites from his home in Comstock Park, Michigan, prior to his Wednesday arrest, receiving at least $13,000 from online merchants who advertised with him.

Lawrence Phelan, a lawyer for the defendant, said Quiroa was in federal custody and expected to be transferred to New York, after having appeared on Wednesday in a Grand Rapids, Michigan federal court. Phelan declined to comment on the case.

The complaint against Quiroa outlines his alleged piracy efforts from February 2010 to January 2012.

It concludes by saying a U.S. Department of Homeland Security enforcement agent posing as a WWE representative last week offered to buy various domain names associated with the defendant, and received a response offering to "make a deal."

Prosecutors will seek the forfeiture of the domain names for the 16 seized websites.

The government had announced the seizure of 10 other websites said to pirate sports events exactly one year ago, shortly before Super Bowl XLV. [ID:nN02241115]

The case is U.S. v. Quiroa, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-mag-00241.

Total Asset Visibility and Business Continuity

Total Asset Visibility and Business Continuity

Posted by Brandon Chiat on Thu, Feb 02, 2012 @ 11:24 AM

In the last blog post we discussed the need for a cooperative partnership between the public and private sectors. It is largely the responsibility of public-offices to coordinate this relationship, as they are responsible for a given community?s disaster preparedness. However, the private sector must not sit idly by; instead private businesses must develop their own preparedness plans. Specifically, I am referring to the private sector?s business continuity, and moreover, the resilience of this business continuity during and after a disaster scenario.

As with any preparedness effort, the key to business continuity is effective communication. It is essential to convey your organization?s plans and strategies, not only within your organization, but also externally, with the community at large. The reason for this is simple: if your message is not received by those who need it, planning efforts will not be effective.

Effective communication:

  • Engages target audiences directly and consistently
  • Encourages that target audience?s active involvement in your preparedness plan
  • Galvanizes support and buy-in that you need for operative continuity

So how do you ensure that your business is effectively communicating your continuity plan? Here are 10 helpful tips:

  1. Set goals and make a plan ? Identify key functions in your organization and work backwards to develop a plan that ensures their resilience during a disaster scenario. Has your organization accounted for its high value fixed and mobile assets? Does your organization?s total asset visibility allow property managers to leverage and protect those resources in a disaster scenario? A clearly articulated plan prevents executives, managers, and employees from losing sight of what needs to be accomplished when disaster strikes.
  2. Establish realistic priorities ? Now that you have accounted for the key functions your business must protect, it is time to prioritize the steps that will ensure their preparedness. Establishing a protocol for disaster response will help prioritize a plan that can be executed immediately and without error.
  3. Practice your plan ? The only thing more devastating than the disaster itself, is an inability to respond when disaster strikes. Sure, you may have a sound plan in theory, but unless your business is running routine exercises, you cannot be sure the plan is effective. As part of this practice, property managers must conduct regular audits of the organization?s asset inventory to ensure total asset visibility.
    ?
  4. Engage leadership ? Your organization?s leadership is vital to a successful business continuity plan. From developing plans to overseeing drills and exercises, if the executives don?t see the value in your preparedness they won?t support it. Effective leadership will realize the importance of a continuity plan immediately; however, some executives only support disaster preparedness to the extent that it supports policy requirements. Emergency managers and property custodians must engage superiors by involving them in the planning, practice, and implementation processes.
  5. Engage experts ? property and emergency managers should rely on both the physical resources, like fixed and mobile assets, and human resources at their disposal. ?Coordinate with each department vital to the protection of your business continuity. Talk to department heads to learn and understand their needs, and moreover, learn from their expertise. Asking for their involvement and acting on their advice will strengthen their commitment to the plan.
  6. Establish a network and rely on it - establishing and maintaining a network of professionals in the industry will help you in many ways. Just as you rely on your internal experts, so too should you seek the advice of professionals outside of your organization. If you have a question or a problem, being able to ask for advice or bounce ideas off of fellow industry members plays to your advantage.
  7. Commit to the plan ? getting leadership to sign off on your business continuity and disaster preparedness plan is the hardest part. Once the decision makers in your company commit, managers and employees will follow suit. However, to ensure commitment on all levels it is important to continue communicating your goals and plan. Ensure that all members of your organization understand the preparedness goals and demonstrate that you have a realistic plan that accounts for all assets and individuals. What?s more, property and emergency managers should make it clear that every employee plays an active role in disaster preparedness; engage employees by asking for their input and listen to their concerns. Reinforce their engagement by scheduling monthly reviews that keep everyone committed to the plan and prepared for disaster.
  8. Know your audience - emergency managers must tailor their approach to different audiences. Whether addressing colleagues, clients or customers, every audience has different needs and expectations of their involvement in a disaster plan.?
  9. Be consistent ? an important part of engaging your audience is to use consistent terminology. Whether you call it disaster recovery, business continuity, business resilience, or emergency preparedness, make sure your audience knows exactly what you are talking about.
  10. Keep it simple ? business continuity plans that are over complex are not nearly as effective as those that are more concise. In an emergency situation, people are not going to have the time to read through the entire plan to find what they need. Keeping your plans short and direct will serve recovery and asset management teams much more effectively. Tabbing your plans so recovery teams can pull out only the section or sections they need to function is an even more effective approach to simplicity. Simple is better.

China PMI tops forecast, hard landing fears ease (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's factory sector expanded slightly in January, confounding expectations for a contraction and supporting hopes the world's second-biggest economy will avoid a hard landing, a government purchasing managers' index showed.

A similar HSBC survey showed the sector contracting the least in three months, further backing the view that a downturn in manufacturing may be bottoming out as the government adopts modest measures to support growth.

The official PMI rose to 50.5 in January from 50.3 in December, beating market expectations of 49.5 as new orders rose to a three-month high. A level of 50 demarcates expansion from contraction.

"This suggests that the manufacturing sector has stabilized somewhat due to supportive fiscal and monetary policies," said Li-Gang Liu, China economist at ANZ in Hong Kong.

"Indeed, the stronger-than-expected PMI supports our baseline scenario of a soft landing."

The Australian dollar gained a third of a cent on hopes that the higher-than-expected government PMI would support Chinese demand for the country's commodities.

"January PMI continued to pick up slightly from the reading of December, indicating that the economic slowdown trend is gradually stabilizing," Zhang Liqun, a researcher with the Development Research Centre of the State Council, said in the official statement.

"The improvement in both new order and stock of purchase sub-indexes reflected the factory production is recovering. But the new export order sub-index dropped last month, showing that the external demand is shrinking and we should pay high attention to the possible hit from external uncertainties."

The central bank is shifting towards a looser policy stance to ward off a sharp growth slowdown, although lingering inflation concerns point to a gradual move. Fiscal policy remains expansionary this year.

The official sub-index for new orders rose to 50.4 in January, its highest since October, from 49.8 in December.

However, reflecting a sluggish global economy and fears of recession in Europe, new exports orders fell for the fourth month running. The index dropped to 46.9 from December's 48.6.

The HSBC PMI stood at 48.8 in January -- broadly in line with its initial reading before China's Lunar New Year holiday.

It marked a slight improvement from 48.7 in December, but HSBC Chief China Economist Qu Hongbin said the data showed more government support was needed for the economy.

"The final results of January's PMI survey confirmed the still weak growth momentum of manufacturing activities into the New Year," Qu said in a statement.

"This calls for more aggressive easing measures to support growth, given that inflation is no longer a concern," he said.

HSBC said the areas of concern in the PMI overshadowed the bright spots. The overall output index pointed to a faster contraction in January than in December -- reflected in a purchasing index, which sank to a near three-year low.

HSBC indexes measuring new export orders and backlogs of work all rose and pointed to growth. The new orders index rose, but remained below 50, suggesting contraction.

    MORE EASING

The PMIs are bouncing around their weakest levels in three years.

China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren highlighted increasing risks to exporters from weakening overseas demand, in remarks published on Wednesday.

"As external demand is now clearly fading, Chinese exporters are facing increasing difficulties," he said.

The official PMI, which is weighted more towards big state firms, generally paints a rosier picture of Chinese factories than a PMI produced by HSBC, which includes small private firms that have been hit harder by credit curbs and weaker demand.

Despite the uptick in the official PMI, most economists expect China's economic growth to slow further in the first quarter, dragged down by weak exports and a slowdown in the rate of property investment.

HSBC's Qu believes economic growth in the first quarter of 2012 will slow down to as little as 8 percent, which would be the weakest pace in almost three years, from 8.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011.

A Reuters poll forecast first-quarter growth of 8.2 percent, which it projected would be the low point of the year. However, full-year growth would still slowdown to 8.4 percent, the weakest in a decade.

In a nod to growth concerns, the central bank announced a cut bank reserve requirement ratios (RRR) -- the first such cut in three years -- at the end of November.

More reserve cuts are expected in coming months to support growth, although the central bank has been injecting more cash into the banking system through its money market operations.

Honda foresees big annual profit fall on disasters, yen (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Honda Motor Co posted a 65 percent slide in quarterly operating profit on Tuesday and forecast the same drop for the full year, when natural disasters in Japan and Thailand hit it harder than rivals.

Japan's No.3 automaker was the slowest to recover from supply chain disruptions after the earthquake and tsunami in March, while it was alone in having a car factory inundated by the historic floods in Thailand, Southeast Asia's export hub.

In 2011, Honda's global output dropped by a fifth to 2.909 million cars, slipping below 3 million for the first time in eight years. All other Japanese automakers, except Nissan Motor Co, built fewer cars also, but the declines were much smaller than at Honda.

For the business year to March 31, 2012, Honda said it expects operating profit of 200 billion yen ($2.6 billion), down 65 percent from last year, hit also by an estimated 8-yen fall in the dollar to 78 yen.

The new profit forecast is far short of the 270 billion yen it projected in August before withdrawing the guidance citing uncertainty over when car production could restart in Thailand. Honda typically provides cautious projections.

Consensus forecasts from 24 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S put annual operating profit at 283 billion yen. Honda is the first Japanese automaker to report third-quarter earnings.

Honda, whose bottom line has been propped up by its leading motorcycle business and strong finance arm, expects annual net profit to fall 60 percent to 215 billion yen. The figure, reported under U.S. accounting standards, includes earnings made in China.

With production steadily recovering in the final months of 2011, investors have turned their attention to an anticipated jump in sales as Honda restocks its depleted inventory.

So far this year, its stock is the best performer among Japanese automakers, rising 14.2 percent as of Monday. Tokyo's auto sector index has gained 8.9 percent.

    LONGER-TERM WORRIES

Still, concern has lingered over whether Honda might be losing its edge after its top-selling Civic got panned in the United States when it was remodeled last year.

Competition in the United States is set to heat up this year as resurgent giants Ford Motor Co and General Motors Co and South Korea's fast-rising Hyundai Motor Co flex their muscles in the sedan segment that has been dominated by Honda and Toyota Motor Corp.

For the October-December third quarter, operating profit fell 65 percent to 44.3 billion yen, far short of an average estimate of 81.2 billion yen in a poll of nine analysts by Reuters. Net profit 41 percent to 47.66 billion yen.

While acknowledging the criticisms of the revamped Civic, Honda's chief executive, Takanobu Ito, stressed this month that the car had topped the country's compact sedan segment in the latest quarter, outselling Toyota's Corolla.

Honda is targeting a 25 percent jump in its U.S. sales this calendar year also by shoring up its struggling Acura premium brand.

Before the results were announced, Honda's shares ended down 0.6 percent, while the benchmark Nikkei average ticked up 0.1 percent.

Domestic rivals Toyota and Nissan are scheduled to announce third-quarter earnings on February 7 and 8.
