Cambodia arrests Pirate Bay co-founder

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? A co-founder of popular file sharing website The Pirate Bay was arrested in Cambodia at the request of Sweden, where he faces a one-year prison term for violating copyright laws, authorities said Monday.

Cambodian authorities arrested Gottfrid Svartholm Warg on Thursday at a home he had rented in the capital, Phnom Penh, said national police spokesman Kirth Chantharith.

"He is being detained in Cambodia and we are waiting to expel him," Chantharith said. Cambodia has no extradition treaty with Sweden but has requested details of Svartholm Warg's crime in order to process his handover, he said.

Svartholm Warg and the site's three other founders were convicted in 2009 by a Swedish court of assisting copyright infringement by helping millions of the site's users to illegally download music, movies and computer games. All were sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay 30 million kronor ($3.6 million) to entertainment companies, including Warner Bros., Sony Music Entertainment, EMI and Columbia Pictures.

Svartholm Warg failed to show up at an appeal hearing in 2010. At the time, his defense attorney told the court he had received text messages from Svartholm Warg's mother saying her son had fallen ill in Cambodia and would not appear in court.

The appeals court reduced prison sentences for the other three co-founders from one year each to between four and 10 months and raised the amount they have to pay in damages to the entertainment industry to 46 million kronor ($6.5 million).

All four defendants denied the charges, arguing that The Pirate Bay doesn't actually host any copyright-protected material itself. Instead, it provides a forum for its users to download content through so-called torrent files. The technology allows users to transfer parts of a large file from several different users, increasing download speeds.

9,000-year-old charms found in Israel

Yael Yolovitch / IAA / AP

Archaeologists say this limestone figurine of a ram, discovered at a highway construction site between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, dates back 9,000 to 9,500 years.

By Alan Boyle

Israeli archaeologists say two animal-shaped figurines discovered at the site of an Israeli highway construction project go back more than 9,000 years, and reflect the religious practices that were common in the region several millennia before Moses.

"It is known that hunting was the major activity in this period," Hamoud Khalaily, one of the directors of the Tel Mosa dig, said in a statement issued Wednesday by the Israeli Antiquities Authority. "Presumably, the figurines served as good-luck statues for ensuring the success of the hunt and might have been the focus of a traditional ceremony the hunters performed before going out into the field to pursue their prey."

One of the figurines, sculpted from limestone and measuring about 6 inches (15 centimeters) in length, looks like a horned ram. The other, smoothed and shaped from dolomite, seems to depict a buffalo, ox or other type of bovine animal, archaeologists said.

The Stone Age figurines turned up during an excavation that's being conducted a few miles north of Jerusalem to clear the way for widening Highway 1 to Tel Aviv. The project's directors said they?were found last week, near a large round building that had a foundation built from fieldstones, and an upper wall section apparently made of mud brick.

Khalaily and excavation co-director Anna Eirikh said the finds date back 9,000 to 9,500 years. That's thousands of years before the time of Moses, who was thought to have lived in the time frame of 1400 to 1500 B.C. But the period when the figurines were created, known as the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, may have been as much of a turning point for the region's social and religious practices as Moses' time was.

This 9,000-year-old figurine was sculpted from dolomite, excavation directors Anna Eirikh and Hamoudi Khalaily said in a statement from the Israel Antiquities Authority. They said it "seems to depict a large animal with prominent horns that separate the elongated body from the head. The horns emerge from the middle of the head sideward and resemble those of a wild bovine or buffalo."

"The Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period ... is considered one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of mankind; many changes took place in it that shaped human society for thousands of years to come," Khalaily said. "During this period, the transition began from nomadism, based on hunting and gathering, to sedentary life, based on farming and grazing."

This was the age when animals were being domesticated, agriculture was on the rise, and urban settlements (including one of the earlier incarnations of the biblical city of Jericho) were being built up. Religion, too, was being codified. At Turkey's G?bekli Tepe archaeological site, for example, researchers have found the world's oldest-known temple, a place of worship that was first built up as far back as 12,000 years ago and was still apparently in use when the Tel Mosa figurines were sculpted hundreds of miles away.

Khalaily suspects that the figurines were used as good-luck charms for hunting, but Eirikh has an alternate theory: Perhaps the figurines were associated with efforts to domesticate wild oxen or goats. Either way, these statuettes served as stand-ins for the creatures that Stone Age societies were beginning to bring under their control.

16 Kickstarter projects that just might destroy civilization as we know it

1 day

Sure, these projects?seem quirky now, but that scrappy amateur fusion reactor might blow up the Earth. Fund at your own risk.?

?

1.?The space elevator
This project has been in the news all day, a 2km space elevator designed to hover over the moon first, and then eventually earth. The founders sound legit, but isn't this the sort of thing you might want to let NASA handle? If my cousin's modern dance documentary falls through, it's not such a big deal, but this is an enormous chunk of metal that could come plummeting out of the sky at any moment. Seems risky.

?

2. The homemade fusion reactor
This is a classic bad idea, making headlines when the Brooklyn-based reactor received funding back in 2010. That the borough has not since been consumed by fire, I put down to pure luck.

3. The Small Hadron Collider
Sure, it's less powerful than the Large Hadron Collider. In fact, it seems to be some kind of effects pedal and its connection to molecular physics is vague at best. Still, we feel as if they're meddling in forces they do not understand.

4. An enormous robot spider
Bond villains use Kickstarter too.

5. Wrathful gods and spirits of Tibet
This documentary project wants to travel to Tibet to study the "wrathful gods and spirits" of Himalayan Buddhism. Does that sound like the kind of thing that could, I don't know, unleash an ancient and unspeakable evil? You can't be too careful.

6. Mech warfare
I know, Battlebots are a thing, but it still seems unwise to build humanoid robots that specialize in hand-to-hand combat.

7. The Arduino satellite
It's just like a regular satellite, except it was designed over the Internet by volunteers with no obvious telecommunications experience.

8. Cards Against Humanity
A card game with the goal of destroying humanity. It's all in the name.

9. The 500,000-volt Tesla coil
Suspiciously similar to something you might build in "Command & Conquer."

10. The Z-Day manual
I take the zombie apocalypse very seriously, but I also think that by obsessively preparing for it, we may actually be weakening society in the event that it comes to pass. Everyone who buys this manual is going to go survivalist as soon as possible. It'll be all bikers and no flyboys! It's a bigger problem than people realize.

11. Roy the Robot
A mechanical claw, reaching toward humanity with unfathomable hatred, successfully funded on July 3.

12. DittoBlox modular building pods
I don't know what this is, but I don't trust it.

13. The Hermes spacecraft
Launch day for the world's first kickstarted rocket is going to be extremely nervous for everyone involved.

14. The Soundlazer
A death ray made of pure sound? Continue, I'm intrigued.

15. Hexy the Hexapod
"Hexy had only a vague sense of the forces that brought him into being, a shadowy network of 'backers' who seemed to respond to his existence with both horror and delight. Were there others like him somewhere? Was there a world in which hexapods lived as something more than an abomination? Whatever his future held, Hexy knew he could not rest until the monsters that created him had answered for their crimes."

16. Troller 1D
Have you seen the movie Screamers? They're kickstarting screamers.

YORK, Maine ? Pink paper lanterns, pink balloons and pink flamingos adorned the York Golf and Tennis Clubhouse on Thursday.

Many guests also wore pink at the first Think Pink! event to benefit the York Hospital Breast Care Center's Living Well program. The evening was a prelude to the Santa's Got a Brand New Bag event by the hospital's Women's Committee, coming up in November. A total of $17,800 was raised through ticket sales and raffles, and 120 people attended.

"We wanted to do something new this year," said committee member Leslie Ware. "All the proceeds from tonight's event will go to the Living Well fund."

Living Well helps women navigating the journey from diagnosis to treatment of breast cancer, and centers on the mind, body and well-being of the patient.

"It's really women helping women," said committee member Polly Stanwood. "We just helped one (newly diagnosed) woman with grocery and gas cards."

The program helps with emergency assistance for women and their families who may be struggling financially during breast cancer treatment.

There also are programs for pre-operative Reiki to reduce stress, massage therapy, meditation, creativity and exercise, including yoga, as well as nutritional guidance, self-care and a facilitated breast cancer support group.

To date, the committee has raised almost $200,000 for the Living Well program.

The York Hospital Women's Committee is now in its 81st year, and to date it has raised more than $600,000 for the purchase of medical equipment, renovations of patient areas and the support of many additional hospital programs.

Guests on Thursday were treated to appetizers, desserts and dancing at the Think Pink! event, and they participated in raffles for tote bags filled with gourmet treats and other items donated by Women's Committee members.

Nurses from the Breast Care Center were at the event, including Crystal Butler, a 33-year employee of the hospital. She was sitting with Dr. Amanda Lewis, a breast radiologist.

"Our department makes it easier for a woman to have a mammography reading as soon as it's done," Lewis said. "It alleviates the waiting and anxiety."

The department has two dedicated breast radiologists.

"We can also do an ultrasound or further testing at the same appointment, so the patient doesn't have to come back again," Butler said.

Some Think Pink! guests brought brand new handbags to be auctioned at the Santa's Got a Brand New Bag event, which will be held Nov. 15 at the Portsmouth Harbor Events and Conference Center.

The live auction, which also will benefit the Living Well program, will include a Kate Spade handbag as well as signed handbags from Oprah Winfrey's personal collection.

Advance tickets are $65 and VIP tables of 10 are $800. For tickets, visit www.yorkhospital.com, e-mail fr@yorkhospital.com or call (207) 351-2385.

Franchise Business Law Blog: Success in Franchising

When I tell someone that my business law practice focuses on franchising, I will at times get a blank stare. This is where I explain that franchising is a concept where?a?person?licenses out their brand and business system to another person in order for that person to operate a similar business under the same name. If I am still getting a deer-in-the-headlights look, I will say, you know, like McDonald?s. Once the golden arches are mentioned everyone understands.

However, I was recently reading an online article from Entrepreneur Magazine about the top franchises. The surprise I took away from this article was the fact that Subway outranked McDonalds on the list of America?s top 10 franchises and the top 10 international franchises.

I don?t know the exact ingredients that Subway has combined in order to make their franchise even more successful than the most well known franchise in the world. If I were to guess, I would not bank it on the popularity of Jared as a spokesperson, $5 footlongs, or the innovative and newest sandwich. Instead, I would guess that, in some way, Subway?s franchisees are making more money than McDonald?s franchisees.

Whenever I meet with a new startup franchisor, the number one thing I like to emphasize is that a successful franchise brand is one in which the franchisees are successful. There are other issues to consider for success, but a franchise system in which the franchisees have the ability to make money will grow. Successful franchisees will tell others about the franchise and franchise sellers and brokers will feel comfortable pushing the franchise brand over other brands.

Some other factors that go into the success of a franchise business include: having a teachable system in place; providing the proper amount of support to the franchisees; excellent training; creative branding; and good marketing. All of these things will help the franchise system grow. But when you really focus on these additional items, they all boil down to the same goal: helping the franchisee turn a profit.

So the next time you want to brainstorm about expanding your franchise business, first look to your system and see how you can help your franchisees increase their profits. This will help you increase the number of franchises in your system. Maybe one day your system will be even more recognizable than the golden arches.

Jordan seeks $700 mn in aid for Syria refugees

Jordan needs $700 million in international aid to cope with an influx of 240,000 refugees from the conflict across the border in Syria, its planning and international cooperation minister said on Saturday.

"The cost for Jordan to continue to welcome our Syrian brothers... is almost $700 million, to take in over 240,000 residents and refugees at Zaatari camp and outside," Jaafar Hassan told a joint news conference with the UN refugee agency.

He said the Jordanian government would not be able to provide aid to the refugees without international assistance.

"Jordan needs to be supported at this time," UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative Andrew Harper told reporters, urging the international community to "do whatever is possible to help."

"We are going to see many more Syrians coming to cross the border. I can't see any indicator this number will be reduced," he said.

There are currently 177,000 Syrians in Jordan, with around 26,000 in the Zaatari refugee camp, north of Amman, that the UNHCR opened five weeks ago, according to the minister.

Clashes broke out in the Zaatari camp on Tuesday over living conditions, following a massive influx of refugees reported by officials.

Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh said the next day that Jordan would expel those who had attacked police at the camp and pledged to improve conditions, after stone-throwing Syrian refugees wounded more than 20 officers.

"Anyone who has been to Zaatari camp knows it is a difficult place ... It is only one month old and it already has 25,000 people," Harper said at the news conference.

At least 1.2 million people have been displaced by the Syrian conflict which erupted 17 months ago, according to the United Nations. Almost 229,000 refugees have been officially registered in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

"Jordan is one of the victims of the Syrian crisis," said Information Minister Samih Maayatah, who was also at Saturday's conference.
