Matthew Vaughn Signs to Direct X-Men: First Class Sequel

matthew-vaughn-x-men-first-class-slice

Matthew Vaughn has signed on to direct a sequel to X-Men: First Class.? According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand) will write the script and Bryan Singer will return to produce.? X-Men: First Class was terrific and I?m glad that Vaughn will return for the sequel.? I?m also excited to see what he?ll do with (hopefully) a bigger budget and more production time.? It?s a little surprising that Vaughn?s frequent collaborator Jane Goldman hasn?t signed on to pen the screenplay, but it?s possible that she?ll come on board later in the process.

Now we can let the speculation begin about what the sequel holds in store.? Vaughn said in May that he would like the second movie would open with the JFK assassination and Magneto controlling the ?magic bullet?.? Indulging conspiracy theorists aside, I?m curious to see which new mutants will the fray.? If the movie is set in 1963, it?s probably too early to see Cyclops and Jean Grey kicking around Xavier?s School for Gifted Youngsters.

Clashes erupt in Cairo during anti-army protest (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Hundreds of Egyptian protesters demanding an immediate end to military rule clashed on Sunday with rivals in civilian clothes outside central Cairo's state media building, the same place where 25 people were killed in a demonstration in October.

"Down with military rule," protesters chanted. The sound of gunshots rang through the air but it was unclear who was firing.

"Tell me council, who chose you? It's Mubarak's gang that appointed you," the crowd chanted, referring to the army council which has ruled Egypt since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted on February 11.

Dozens of protesters clashed with a group of people protesters described as "thugs" brought out to attack them, hurling stones at each other. There was no sign of police or troops intervening or securing the media building.

"We were protesting here peacefully, and all of a sudden a group of around 50 thugs came from side streets surrounding the building and attacked us with stones and glass bottles, and we responded by throwing stones back at them. They tore down our tents," said Mohamed Abdo, 45, an elevator worker.

State radio said residents in a poor area next to Maspero, the site of the demonstration, had challenged the protesters because they were disrupting shops and businesses in the area.

Protesters often say such "thugs," usually youths in plain clothes and sometimes members of the police force, have been hired by the authorities to disrupt demonstrations.

The October violence at Maspero in which 25 people died erupted when troops tried to break up a protest sparked by what Christians said was an attack on a church in southern Egypt.

Egyptians have become increasingly frustrated by military rule, though many still see the army as a vital force for stability after months of political turmoil.

"The country cannot continue like this. Things are getting worse. They have to transfer power now. The country cannot stay like this any longer," said Waleed Kamal, 25.

He was not among the protesters, but lives nearby. "If we get civilian rule, the country will get back on its feet, the economic wheel will turn," he added.

Egyptians on January 25 marked the first anniversary of mass demonstrations against Mubarak in Tahrir Square, near the Maspero site of Sunday's protest.

Goldman executives get access to restricted stock (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Top Goldman Sachs Group Inc executives received previously restricted stock awards that are now worth $47.7 million, according to regulatory filings, though the executives are still limited in selling most of their Goldman stock.

Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein, Chief Financial Officer David Viniar, Chief Operating Officer Gary Cohn and top investment banker and vice chairman John Weinberg each received 45,497 shares worth $5.1 million, based on Goldman's closing price of $111.77 on Friday.

Seven other executives each received previously awarded shares worth $2.8 million to $5 million, according to Form 4 filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Among those executives are vice chairmen Michael Evans and Michael Sherwood, as well as Goldman's legal chief, Gregory Palm, its accounting chief, Sarah Smith, and compliance chief Alan Cohen.

The stock awards became unlocked on Wednesday, but the 11 executives did not immediately sell those shares. They did sell an additional $20.2 million worth of Goldman stock at $107.44 apiece to cover tax obligations.

The transactions took place on Wednesday, when executives received access to the previously restricted stock.

Starting in 2009, Wall Street banks began shifting more of their bonus awards into stock that executives are required to hold for multi-year periods in an effort to align incentives with long-term performance.

In 2011, some of those payments started coming due, leaving compensation costs stubbornly high for big investment banks, even as they cut jobs and bonus pools due to weak business.

Last year, Goldman paid $12.2 billion in compensation costs, down 21 percent from 2010, and reduced its payroll by 2,400 jobs. Yet because revenue fell even more, compensation as a percentage of revenue rose to 42.4 percent from 39.3 percent the previous year.

Acupuncture May Boost Pregnancy Success Rates (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Jan. 27 (HealthDay News) -- When a couple is trying to have a baby and can't, it can be emotionally and financially draining. But help may be available in an unexpected form: acupuncture.

Medical experts believe that this ancient therapy from China, which involves placing numerous thin needles at certain points in the body, can help improve fertility in both men and women.

"Acupuncture has been around for almost 3,000 years. It's safe and there are no bad side effects from it," explained Dr. Lisa Lilienfield, a family practice and pain management specialist at the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, Va. "It may not be the only thing that is done in isolation to treat infertility, but it helps get the body primed and maximizes the potential effects of fertility treatments."

Dr. Jamie Grifo, director of the New York University Fertility Center and director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said that "it's not a panacea, but acupuncture does help some patients have better success."

"It's one non-traditional modality to help manage the stress of infertility, and it does improve pregnancy rates and quality of life in some people," he said.

In addition to relieving stress, Lilienfield said that acupuncture can help increase a woman's fertility by improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus. This improved blood flow can help thicken the lining of the uterus, increasing the chances of conception.

It may also help correct problems with the body's neuroendocrine system. Acupuncture can help activate the brain to release hormones that will stimulate the ovaries, adrenal glands and other organs that are involved in reproduction, according to Lilienfield. Acupuncture's effect on the neuroendocrine system may also help infertile men by stimulating sperm production, she said.

Studies that have been done on acupuncture and fertility have had mixed results, with some showing benefits and others showing none. Grifo said the differing results may have something to do with the design of the studies. Two areas that appear to be more consistently helped by acupuncture treatments are in vitro fertilization and women who are infertile due to polycystic ovary syndrome.

Two studies -- one in Acupuncture in Medicine and the other in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation -- found a benefit when acupuncture was used on the day an embryo was transferred into a woman's uterus.

The study from the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation also found that women with polycystic ovary syndrome and men who had infertility issues with no known cause also benefitted from acupuncture.

The actual treatment session involves placing very thin needles at specific points in the body. In Chinese medicine, these points are believed to be areas where a person's "qi" (pronounced chee), or life force, is blocked, according to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In Western medicine, it's believed that the needle placement may release the body's natural painkillers.

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat pain, such as back pain, headache and menstrual cramps, according to the center.

Lilienfield said that acupuncture treatment costs vary, depending on where someone lives and the training of the practitioner. In her center, a treatment costs about $135, and most people receive six to eight treatments for infertility, she said. Insurance reimbursement also varies, she noted, though many insurance companies will pay for acupuncture.

In general, someone younger than 35 is often advised to try to get pregnant for about a year before seeking treatment for infertility. "But, if you're anxious to get going, six months is a reasonable time to wait," Lilienfield said. And women older than 35 probably shouldn't wait more than six months, she added.

Grifo said he doesn't favor waiting that long to seek treatment. "If you are trying to get pregnant and struggling with it, you don't need to wait a year," he said. "And, if you're over 35, don't wait six months to get worked up if it's causing you distress."

Newt Gingrich Hits Mitt Romney For Efforts To 'Distort And Deceive' In New Web Video

Newt Gingrich's campaign released a web video attacking Mitt Romney Friday, hitting the former Massachusetts governor for his efforts to "mislead, distort and deceive" on the campaign trail.

Gingrich's team used several of Romney's comments from Thursday night's Republican presidential debate as fodder for the ad, which claims Romney has told several fibs to win over voters.

The video shoots down Romney's claim that he has always voted Republican with reference to the 1992 Massachusetts primary, when Romney voted for a "liberal Democrat" instead of Pat Buchanan or George H.W. Bush. The spot also fact-checks Romney's claim that his investments in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were part of a blind trust.

"If we can't trust what Mitt Romney says about his own record, how can we trust him on anything?" the video says.

Romney's campaign released a statement condemning the ad, saying "Gingrich's desperate smears have already been called 'inflammatory' by Marco Rubio and 'ridiculous' by Jeb Bush."

"It is laughable to see lectures on honesty coming from a paid influence peddler who suffered an unprecedented ethics reprimand, was forced to pay a $300,000 penalty, and resigned in disgrace at the hands of his own party," the statement said. "Speaker Gingrich is desperate to distract from his record of failed and unreliable leadership in an attempt to try and prop up his sinking campaign."

Another Republican featured in the ad is former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who is shown saying if a man is "dishonest to get a job, he'll be dishonest on the job." Huckabee released the following statement on his appearance in the spot:

Any use of an out of context quote from the Republican Presidential primary 4 years ago in a political ad to advocate for the election or defeat of another candidate is not authorized, approved, or known in advance by me. I have made it clear that I have not and do not anticipate making an endorsement in the GOP primary, but will support the nominee. My hope is to defeat Barack Obama and win majorities in both the House and Senate, not to attack any of the Presidential candidates who might be our nominee.

HuffPost's Mark Blumenthal points out that the video lacks the "I approve this message" disclosure that is required by federal law for television advertising paid for by federal campaigns, meaning it is unlikely to appear anywhere but the web:

So at very least, the new attack ad posted to YouTube cannot appear in its current form as a paid advertisement, and the relatively small amount spent by the Gingrich campaign on broadcast advertising suggests that few Floridians would see it, even if aired.

Watch the video above.

Starbucks 1Q profit up 10 percent on strong sales (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Starbucks Corp. reported its biggest quarterly revenue gain since the recession began, but investors worried after the company issued a modest forecast for the year.

The Seattle-based coffee company reported on Thursday after the stock markets closed that fiscal first-quarter revenue grew 16 percent ? the largest quarterly gain since 2007. It attracted new customers by adding stores in China and Morocco, upgrading locations in the U.S. and rolling out single-serve coffee and other new items at grocery stores.

"Starbucks is firing on all cylinders and taking full advantage of the many global opportunities that lie ahead," CEO Howard Schultz said in a statement.

Profit rose 10 percent to $382.1 million, or 50 cents per share, for the quarter that ended Jan. 1. That's up from $346.6 million, or 45 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue increased to $3.44 billion with growth from all its business lines.

Results beat the 49 cents per share on revenue of $3.29 billion that analysts expected, according to FactSet.

Starbucks said revenue from its stores open at least a year ? an important measure because it strips away the impact of recently opened or closed stores ? increased 9 percent as more customers visited its cafes and spent more each trip. It was the company's most successful holiday season ever, with customers buying more peppermint mochas, gingerbread lattes and Starbucks gift cards.

Starbucks also benefited from the addition of 241 new stores during the quarter. It now operates 17,244 stores worldwide, with plans to open another 800 in the coming year.

Additionally, Starbucks delivered major gains in its consumer products business, which sells its new single-serve coffee products, Via instant coffee, Starbucks ice cream and other items for sale in grocery stores and other retailers. Revenue from this segment increased 72 percent and Starbucks expects the business to continue to grow.

The solid quarterly performance was followed by a full-year forecast that was slightly below Wall Street expectations as Starbucks acknowledged that it continues to struggle with higher costs for coffee beans, dairy products and other ingredients it needs.

Starbucks said these costs were $105 million higher for the quarter than this time last year, sending its operating margins down from 17 percent to 16.2 percent for the quarter. Starbucks said commodity costs will add up to $230 million in costs for the full fiscal year but it anticipates the pressure will lesson in the second-half of the year.

Starbucks nudged up the lower-end of its earnings guidance. It now expects to earn $1.78 to $1.82 per share for the full year, up from prior guidance of $1.75 to $1.82 for the year. But it falls just short of analyst expectations of $1.83 per share, according to FactSet.

Jack Russo, an analyst with Edward Jones, said the modest outlook and lower margins drove some investors away in after-hours trading. On the news, the company's shares fell 54 cents to $47.80 after the markets closed.

Starbucks remains a strong growth company, Russo said, but the stock is already rich. It has hovered near record highs this week. Its shares have traded between $30.75 and $48.39 in the past 52 weeks.

Buffett Rule's impact? W.H. won't say (Politico)

President Barack Obama has left unanswered a major question about his Buffett Rule tax on millionaires: Just how much money would it raise?

Administration officials are not releasing projected revenues from the much-hyped plan named after billionaire investor Warren Buffett. During the State of the Union address, Obama tied his proposal ? which would tax those earning $1 million at a minimum of 30 percent ? to cutting a deficit estimated to top $1.1 trillion for the fourth straight year.

But for the moment, the White House wants to keep the attention focused on Obama?s argument that it?s unfair to tax Buffett?s secretary at a higher rate than her boss.

?I?m not going to give you a schedule of how broad individual tax reform would break down and what impact it would have,? White House press secretary Jay Carney said at the Wednesday briefing. ?The president simply believes that as a matter of principle that unfairness ought to be changed.?

Republican lawmakers ? noting the absence of real numbers ? attacked the plan as a political charade, an attempt to score points in the November election instead of a serious policy to reduce federal debt. One outside analysis by the non-partisan Tax Foundation indicates the rule would generate another $36.7 billion a year in revenue ? far from enough to make a serious dent in a national debt of $15 trillion.

?It?s a smokescreen,? Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) told POLITICO. ?Barack Obama just wants to pit one group against another so he can raise more money to spend on a bloated government.?

Along with Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), Scalise unveiled an alternative to the Buffett Rule in October, sponsoring a measure that would let the wealthiest Americans volunteer to pay more in taxes to specifically lower the deficit.

In the State of the Union, Obama pitted the Buffett Rule against being forced to carve up government funding for education, medical research and the military, saying it was choice between tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and ?investments in everything else.

?If we?re serious about paying down our debt, we can?t do both,? the president said.

Obama would also require closing tax code loopholes for millionaires, and in return has offered to take steps to restrain the bulging costs of Medicare and Medicaid.

The Buffett Rule?s minimum tax could eat into the incomes of as many as 200,000 taxpayers, according to an October study by the Congressional Research Service.

On average, someone hauling in $1 million a year might have fork over another $50,000 to Uncle Sam. That?s a sizable tab for individuals but not a lot for the government, said David Logan, an economist at the Tax Foundation, a Washington, D.C. think tank.

Advertised airfares soon will reflect what you pay

Nilou Motamed of Travel + Leisure magazine talks about new regulations that will go into effect this week, mandated by the Department of Transportation, and how they will affect your travel.

By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

Score one for truth in advertising.

Starting Jan. 26, travelers shopping for air travel will no longer have to click through multiple web pages ? or read the fine print in newspaper ads ? to find out what their plane tickets truly cost. Instead, the first price posted will have to include all taxes and mandatory fees.?

?We believe consumers need to be able to see the entire price they will have to pay the first time an airfare is presented to them,? said Bill Mosley, spokesman for the Department of Transportation.

Such full-fare advertising ?is a welcome change,? said Charlie Leocha, director of the Consumer Travel Alliance. ?It?s important that consumers at least know the full cost of their trip while they?re looking for it.?

The rule is part of a larger package of passenger protections being rolled out by the Department of Transportation (DOT), but the advertising regulation will have the most impact on the greatest number of travelers.

Consider:?Last week, an online search at Southwest.com revealed one-way fares between Dallas and Chicago for $84.65, or $169.30 roundtrip. Click on those fares, though, and the actual cost with taxes and fees rises to $218.20.

Even more eye-opening, travelers searching for flights between Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,?and Las Vegas on Spirit Airlines might be enticed by web fares of $71 each way, or $142 roundtrip. The actual cost? $219.18, which includes $77.18 in taxes and fees.

Beginning?Jan. 26, the first posted fares for the above itineraries will have to be displayed as $218.20 and $219.18, respectively.

The rule has not been well-received by the airlines. Allegiant, Spirit and Southwest are currently contesting the requirement in court, claiming that requiring airlines to post tax-inclusive fares runs counter to the way most other products and services are sold.

?There is no justification for treating air travel differently from just about everything else that consumers purchase, i.e., they pay for the price of goods and services and then pay tax,? said Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz via e-mail. ??Forcing airlines to include taxes will also make air travel ?look' more expensive when in reality it's not.?

There?s also the potential for even more confusion, said Steve Lott, spokesman for the industry trade group Airlines for America. ?When people hear ?fees,? they think it refers to fees for baggage, Wi-Fi or other airline fees,? he told msnbc.com. ?It really just refers to the government fees and taxes.?

Potential confusion and pending lawsuits aside, the airlines are expected to comply with the full-fare advertising rule, as well as several others?that take?effect on Jan. 24, including a requirement allowing travelers to cancel reservations within 24 hours without penalty and a prohibition against post-purchase price increases.

On the other hand, the airlines received something of a break on pending rules requiring that travelers? specific bag fees be disclosed on their e-ticket confirmations and mandating fee consistency across multiple carriers on interline and code-share flights.

Earlier this month, DOT denied an industry request to postpone those rules but noted that it would not strictly enforce them for six months.

No simple explanation in AF Academy sex crime data (AP)

DENVER ? Nine years after a sexual assault scandal at the Air Force Academy sent shock waves across the military, the Defense Department last month announced a spike in reported assaults at the school ? and days later the Air Force filed sex-crime charges against three cadets.

It isn't clear whether the disturbing news means sexual predation is on the rise at the academy, experts and school officials say. It could reflect the academy's efforts to encourage cadets to report any kind of unwanted sexual contact.

"I don't think anybody knows how to read that data," said Lory Manning, director of the Women in the Military Project at the Women's Research & Education Institute in Washington and a retired Navy captain.

The number of assaults reported at the academy since the 2005-06 school year, when comprehensive record-keeping began, has varied widely. From 10 in the first year, the totals rose to 24 two years later, plummeted to eight in 2008-09 and then rose again, to 20 in 2009-10 and 33 last year. Nearly 80 percent of the academy's approximately 4,600 cadets are male.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday nearly 3,200 sexual assaults were reported across the military last year, but he said the real number is probably closer to 19,000 because so few victims report the crime.

Panetta said the Pentagon would prepare initiatives to reduce the number of assaults.

It's a battle the Air Force Academy outside Colorado Springs, Colo., has been waging since 2003.

In January of that year, female cadets came forward to say that when they reported being sexually assaulted, they were punished for minor infractions as drinking. Some went to a local rape crisis clinic instead of academy officers, saying they feared their military careers would be damaged if they spoke with commanders.

Top leaders at the academy were replaced and programs put in place to prevent sexual abuse and to encourage cadets to report incidents.

It's impossible to measure how many crimes the training may have prevented, said Teresa Beasley, the academy's sexual assault coordinator. "How do you measure prevention?" she said.

"The number of reports have gone up," said Col. Reni Renner, vice commandant of cadets for climate and culture. "But it's hard to draw a correlation between the number of incidents and the number of reports."

Beasley and Renner say they believe the school is making headway. They point to a growing number of cadets coming to Beasley's office after speaking with cadets who came forward and were treated well.

Other cadets ask for help with repercussions from an assault that occurred before they enrolled. The academy said five of the 33 incidents reported in the 2010-11 school year occurred before the victim entered the military.

"My sense ... is that we really are seeing an increase in trust in our system," Renner said.

Manning said she has no doubt the academy is sincere in its efforts.

"As to the effectiveness, well, they've got three guys charged now," Manning said.

The academy announced on Jan. 5 that three male cadets had been charged with sex crimes stemming from unrelated incidents between February 2010 and May 2011. Academy officials said the three cases were announced together because the investigations happened to end at about the same time.

Robert M. Evenson Jr. is charged with rape, Stephan H. Claxton with abusive sexual assault and Kyle A. Cressy with aggravated assault. Evenson and Claxton face other, non-sex-related counts.

Cressy's civilian lawyer, Richard Stevens, did not immediately return a phone call. Claxton's military attorney, Capt. Nicole Torres, declined comment. The academy said Evenson's civilian lawyer asked not to be identified.

Hearings are expected to begin next week. Air Force attorneys haven't yet calculated sentencing ranges for any convictions, said academy spokesman Meade Warthen.

It's unclear what effect prosecutions have on encouraging victims to come forward. Beasley said she believes that in general, prosecutions reassure victims that they'll be taken seriously. But a sex-crime court-martial at the academy in the 2008-2009 school year led to an acquittal, and reports of sexual assaults plummeted that year, from 24 to eight.

The academy's sex assault prevention campaign starts before freshman studies begin. Among other things, cadets are told the Department of Defense definition of sexual assault includes "intentional sexual contact ... when the victim does not or cannot consent."

The breadth of the definition comes as a surprise to some.

"When they come in at basic, you see the `deer-in-the-headlight' look ? `Wow, I didn't realize I'd been assaulted,'" Beasley said.

By the time cadets are seniors, the training includes what their roles as officers will be, including what to do when someone brings a sex-assault complaint.

Manning said academy officials are "trying their level best."

"I think it's a problem we won't totally solve ever. But I think there's room for one less this year, two less next year," she said.

Rep. Jackie Speier, a California Democrat, said in an interview the day of Panetta's announcement that the military culture has "run amok" and the rules for handling sexual abuse need an overhaul. She has introduced a bill that would create a separate system within the military to investigate and prosecute sex crimes.

Currently, a victim's commander might be part of the decision-making process. That creates a conflict of interest; the commander could suffer career damage if a subordinate is victimized; the commander could be a friend of the suspect; or the commander could be the suspect, Speier said.

"We've got to do something fairly dramatic to get the academies back on track and the military back on track," she said.

Kristin Cavallari: Pregnant!!

Kristin Cavallari is expecting her first child, the reality star herself confirms!

"We are thrilled to announce we are expecting our first child together," she and her fiance, NFL star Jay Cutler, said in a joint statement. "It's an amazing time in our life and we can't wait to meet the new addition to our growing family."

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler Photograph

Last year was an up-and-down one for the Kristin 25, and Jay, 28, who got engaged, broke up, then got back together and soon got engaged a second time.

The former Hills star and Dancing with the Stars contestant said, "Sometimes, in order for things to get better, they have to end – even if it's momentarily."

Looks like it did wonders for the couple.

Shortly after their split, they became happier than ever it seems, with Jay dutifully attending her DWTS performances and she his Chicago Bears games.

Congratulations to the expectant pair!

Netflix is looking for a new Chief Marketing Officer, if you think you can do better

Considering how 2011 progressed for Netflix, it's not entirely surprising to hear some changes are in store at the top when it comes to marketing and communications. The video rental giant announced that its Chief Marketing Officer of the last dozen years, Leslie Kilgore, will be taking a position on its board as a "non-executive director", replaced in the interim by Jessie Becker as it conducts an external search for a permanent replacement. Also shifting positions is Jonathan Friedland who will be the new Chief Communications officer, and both Becker and Friedland will report directly to CEO Reed Hastings. Netflix's relationships with its customers were definitely damaged by last year's price hike and the shocking Qwikster spinoff announcement / unannouncement that followed, with a slate of original content on the way and some changes in store for its content licensing, we'll see if it can get the magic back in 2012 -- we're not so sure that the latest round of ads featuring beavers and hamsters (one's embedded after the break) are the way.

A deep snow pile made things a bit challenging for an Intercity Transit rider while boarding the bus on Friday, Jan. 20,2012 in Olympia, Wash. Thick ice brought down trees and power lines in the region overnight, following two days of snow and ice storms. A powerful Pacific Northwest storm knocked out power to about 250,000 electric customers around Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia after it coated much of Washington in ice and swelled Oregon rivers, killing a child and two adults. Besides the outages, the big concern now is more flooding in both states with warmer temperatures and rain. (AP Photo/The Olympian, Steve Bloom)

(AP) ? Tens of thousands of Pacific Northwest residents faced the prospect of a chilly weekend after a powerful storm brought snow and ice and left a tangle of fallen trees and damaged power lines. Several Oregon counties saw their worst flooding in more than a decade.

The National Weather Service forecast more rain and winds gusting as high as 40 mph Saturday in Western Washington, a combination that could bring down even more snow-laden and ice-damaged trees.

Nearly 230,000 customers were without power late Friday night in Western Washington, about 220,000 of them Puget Sound Energy customers.

The utility has brought in repair crews from across the West and planned to field more than 800 linemen on Saturday, in addition to tree-trimming crews, spokesman Roger Thompson said.

"The wind is a wild card that could set us back," he said, adding PSE hoped to have the majority of the outages restored by Sunday, although some customers will probably be without power into early next week.

The Weather Service predicted weekend lows in the mid-30s.

Several warming shelters have been opened in the area to aid people whose homes are without heat.

Despite warnings from emergency officials, the first cases of possible carbon monoxide poisoning surfaced Friday night. Two families in the Seattle suburb of Kent were taken to hospitals after suffering separate cases of possible poisoning. Both had been using charcoal barbecues indoors for heat.

The storm was already blamed for three deaths. A mother and her 1-year-old son died after torrential rain on Wednesday swept away a car from an Albany, Ore., grocery store parking lot. An elderly man was fatally injured Thursday by a falling tree as he was backing an all-terrain vehicle out of a backyard shed near Seattle.

On Washington's Mount Rainier, a blizzard kept rescuers from searching Friday for two campers and two climbers missing since early this week. Just east of that region, about 200 skiers and workers were able to leave the Crystal Mountain ski resort after transportation officials reopened the area's main highway, closed two days earlier by fallen trees.

Near Tacoma, three people escaped unharmed Friday when a heavy snow and ice load on the roof of an Allied Ice plant caused the building to collapse. West Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Hallie McCurdy said they heard loud noises and got out just in time.

As floodwaters receded, residents of Oregon's Willamette Valley began taking stock of damage in soaked cities.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber paid a visit Friday to the hard-hit town of Turner, where 100 homes were damaged or still underwater.

Friday's mainly dry streets belied a morning of terror barely 24 hours earlier, when emergency crews conducted 55 boat rescues as water filled streets, homes and businesses.

"You just watch the water rise hour by hour, and there's nothing you can do about it," Mayor Paul Thomas said. "It's a long, slower sort of torture."

Kitzhaber said the state would work with local and federal officials to try and get disaster funding to Turner and other communities hard-hit by flooding.

The governor praised residents' strong sense of community as neighbors helped each other.

Nancy Ko saw that spirit first-hand. From the safety of higher ground, she watched a live feed from a security camera as water rose over the curb and lapped against the front door of the convenience store and cafe she owns just feet from Mill Creek.

Out of the blue, five strangers showed up and plopped sandbags in front of the door, preventing damage that she believes would have otherwise been far more severe.

"Just a godsend," said Ko, a Korean immigrant who has owned the store for six years. "Good person, amazing persons."

Elsewhere in the Willamette Valley, a 35-year-old woman who drove a Ford Mustang into 4 feet of floodwater was plucked from the roof Friday by deputies who arrived by boat to save her. It was one of a number of dramatic rescues in western Oregon, left sodden by as much as 10 inches of rain in a day and a half that has brought region's worst flooding in 15 years.

Interstate 5, the main road connecting Seattle and Portland, was briefly closed near Centralia so crews could remove fallen power lines.

Much of Washington's capital, Olympia, was without power.

Gov. Chris Gregoire's office, legislative buildings and other state agencies in Olympia lost electricity for several hours before power was restored. The governor thanked repair crews late Friday by hand-delivering peanut butter cookies.

The storm was "a constant reminder of who's in charge. Mother Nature is in charge, she gives us a wake-up call every once in a while, this is one of those," Gregoire said.

It was still snowing in the Cascades, with up to 2 feet possible in the mountains over the weekend.

At Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle, airlines were trying to accommodate passengers whose flights were canceled Thursday. The airport's largest carrier, Alaska Airlines, canceled 50 of its 120 daily departures Friday. On Thursday, Alaska and sister airline Horizon canceled 310 flights to and from Seattle, affecting 29,000 passengers.

In Seattle, Carly Nelson was negotiating an icy sidewalk on her way to Starbucks. Nelson has been frequenting her neighborhood coffee shop to avoid cabin fever.

"I'm pretty tired of it. It gets old pretty fast. All my friends are stranded in little pockets and you can't get together to go to yoga," she said. "I'm just looking forward to being able to go wherever I want to go."

Experts see tough road for Kodak to reinvent self

(AP) ? Even in bankruptcy, Kodak boasts some enviable strengths: a golden brand, technology firepower that includes a rich collection of photo patents, and more than $4 billion in annual sales of digital cameras, printers, and inks.

But all that may not be enough to revive its declining fortunes in a Chapter 11 overhaul. Kodak is at a crossroads: It could to go the way of fallen Montgomery Ward and Circuit City, two corporate names that never recovered from long declines. Or Kodak could prosper after bankruptcy like General Motors.

Of the many restructuring experts interviewed by The Associated Press on Thursday, none are optimistic that Kodak can make a strong comeback.

Selling select business lines and patents and making the right bets on a limited number of new technology products could allow the Eastman Kodak Co. to survive, several experts said. But none see a path back to anything close to the glory days of the former photography titan.

"You can pick your metaphor: 'Stick a fork in them,' 'They're over the cliff' -- they're done," said Bill Brandt, chief executive of turnaround consultant Development Specialists Inc. in Chicago. "The Kodak as we know it is done, unequivocally."

The company's only hope, Brandt said, is to reinvent itself as an intellectual property company. But first it will have to put its patent portfolio up for sale and determine whether it wants to sell them based on what's offered, he said, or retain them and try to remake the company over a period of years.

Kodak said only that it has appointed a chief restructuring officer to head the effort: Dominic DiNapoli, vice president of FTI Consulting. It expects to complete its U.S.-based restructuring next year.

Whatever the company does now is likely to be too little, too late, said Gary Adelson, managing director of turnaround firm NHB Advisors in Los Angeles.

"I can't imagine a big future for Kodak," said Adelson, who thinks the company should just sell its assets. "I think it's going to be another one of those companies that didn't make the transition to the future."

Some experts think the company can get by once it cuts debt by reducing pension and employee benefit costs in bankruptcy, then disposes of its least valuable products.

Only a much leaner, more focused Kodak can survive, said Haresh Sapra, an accounting professor and bankruptcy specialist at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. "They probably should go back to basics and focus on one or two of those business lines that are self-sustaining," he said.

The primary hope lies in digital businesses that generated some $4.5 billion in revenue last year, an amount Kodak said accounted for about 75 percent of total sales. That includes consumer devices such as self-service photo kiosks, printers and high-volume document scanners.

"If they can take their existing products and improve them and make them much cheaper, I see no reason why the company can't emerge with a healthier balance sheet," said Edward Neiger, a partner at New York bankruptcy law firm Neiger LLP. "It's going to be a shell of what the old company was, but I don't think they need to liquidate."

In a statement accompanying the Chapter 11 filing on Thursday, the company touted its "pioneering investments in digital and materials deposition technologies" in recent years.

The best-case scenario for Kodak in the long run may be to end up like Polaroid, suggested Eli Lehrer, who heads the nonprofit Heartland Institute's Center on Finance, Insurance and Real Estate in Washington. The company long known for its instant-film cameras stopped making them and filed for bankruptcy in 2008. The Polaroid name, however, lives on under private ownership, albeit as a much smaller firm.

Kodak has a better brand name, Lehrer said, although "That doesn't necessarily translate to people keeping their jobs, or stockholders keeping anything."

Comodo Firewall 5

Most experts agree that the minimum acceptable level of PC security must include at least antivirus and firewall protection. If you've found a favorite free standalone antivirus, what you need is a free firewall like Comodo Firewall 5 (free) to pair with it. But be warned, Comodo comes with a lot of baggage above and beyond the typical firewall. If you don't like firewall popup queries, you may be staggered by the even more complex queries from its behavior-based Defense+ component.

One thing you won't have to worry about is wading through screen after screen of installation options. The initial screen offers to switch your system's DNS to Comodo SecureDNS and lets you choose whether to submit unrecognized programs for cloud-based behavior analysis. With one click you agree to the license agreement and start the installation?simple! Note, too, that it's free for both personal and business use.

Straightforward Firewall
As expected, the firewall stealthed all the test system's ports and passed the port scans and other Web-based tests I threw at it. However, I was surprised to find that after these tests the summary screen still reported zero intrusions blocked and that the firewall event log was empty.

The firewall has five security levels for controlling how programs access the network, or three if you skip the extremes of blocking all traffic and blocking no traffic. In the default Safe Mode, it blocks outbound connections and allows inbound connections for known safe programs, creating a rule so the safe program will always be able to connect. If it detects an unknown program it asks the user whether to allow or block the connection and, by default, creates a rule to remember the answer.

The less strict Training Mode should only be used on a computer that's guaranteed clean. In this mode the firewall allows all inbound and outbound traffic by any program, and also creates a rule so that the connection will always be allowed.

Why create rules? When you choose the stricter Custom Policy level, only connections for which rules already exist are permitted. For any other connection the firewall queries the user. Running for a while in Safe Mode or Training Mode cuts down the number of popups. You can also manually mark any program as trusted or blocked.

Do note that by default you'll get no popup alerts regardless of the security level, because by default the program suppresses popup firewall alerts and treats them as if you chose to allow the connection. Most users have no idea whether to allow or block a given connection. Some just always allow it. Others start by blocking everything but switch to allowing everything after they disable something important. Perhaps Comodo's always-allow default is just a pragmatic nod to what actually happens.

I'm not impressed with firewalls that push security decisions off on the user. Advanced firewalls like those found in Norton Internet Security 2012 ($69.99 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) and Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 3.5 stars) automatically configure permissions for millions of known good and bad programs and make their own determination on how to handle unknowns. ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012 (free, 4.5 stars) is more like Comodo in that it asks the user how to handle unknowns, but it, too, has a database of millions. ZoneAlarm popups are relatively rare.

Comodo Firewall's program control is overshadowed by its Defense+ module, a kind of behavior-based malware detection that I'll describe in detail later in this article. Defense+ proved effective against leak tests, programs that attempt to connect to the Internet behind the firewall's back. I consider a product successful if it detects the attempt, since the whole purpose of leak test techniques is to connect invisibly. Comodo detected sneaky actions like trying to modify Internet Explorer in memory, trying to launch and control IE, or trying to modify a program's user interface in every case, even one that got past ZoneAlarm.

It's worth noting, though, that leak test control is only necessary when firewall program control relies either on simple rules or on user queries. Norton and Kaspersky ignore leak tests because analysis shows they're not actually malicious.

Like ZoneAlarm, Comodo Firewall didn't actively detect or block any of the thirty-odd exploits generated by the Core IMPACT penetration tool. Norton and Kaspersky block exploit attacks at the network level. When last tested, Norton blocked all of them and identified almost all by name.

Unfortunately, this firewall isn't quite as well-hardened against attack as ZoneAlarm. I couldn't kill it using Task Manager, and I couldn't stop its essential Windows service. However, setting the service's startup type to disabled and forcing a reboot disabled the firewall. It visibly launched, but its protection never started.

The basic firewall settings are fairly general, and accessible to non-expert users. Even so, most users shouldn't change the defaults. Clicking Network Security Policy brings up a dialog with a vastly more complex set of options. If you can look at a line like "Allow ICMP In from MAC Any To MAC Any Where ICMP Message Is TIME EXCEEDED" without fainting, then you may be qualified to review and adjust these settings.

RAMS: Jeff Fisher was hired to replace Steve Spagnuolo, who was fired Jan. 2 along with general manager Billy Devaney. Fisher sat out the 2011 season after 17 years with the Titans, a stint that included a Super Bowl berth in 2000. The Titans won three division titles and made six playoff appearances under Fisher, who stepped down a year ago as the league's longest-tenured coach, saying he needed a break. AP

Emily Maynard as The Bachelorette: Sort of Confirmed!

It looks like America's sweetheart is going back to the franchise that made her a quasi-star. Emily Maynard will be the star of The Bachelorette, according to reports!

"It's official, Emily is the new Bachelorette," an insider close to Emily tells Life & Style, which is not really official at all, but still. It's been reported previously as well.

Moreover, in order to accommodate "ABC is even going to move filming to Charlotte [North Carolina, Emily's hometown]. It won't be in Los Angeles at all."

The Bride to Be

It's been reported that ABC asked her to star in the next season of the series, despite her reluctance in early discussions, in large part based on her daughter.

She had fans convinced she wasn't interested. Just last summer Emily Maynard wrote: "I don't want to be The Bachelorette." Perhaps she changed her mind?

Since ending her engagement with that stiff Brad Womack in May, the North Carolina stunner has been linked to Jeremy Shockey and Matt Nordgren.

She's denied dating both ... and has yet to confirm or deny that she's going back on The Bachelorette this time. Stay tuned for an official confirmation. Probably.
