hashkudia: Principles Of Stand-Up Wrestling ? Recreation and ...

To be a superb wrestler, it is advisable to know the rules of stand-up wrestling. Principally, all of it begins on the feet. It?s good to know the proper positions. You want to be in the very best situation, so that you will be able to undertake the most environment friendly and effective wrestling postures. These are the positions or postures that you simply want as a way to defeat your opponent. By understanding these postures, you will be able to anticipate your opponent?s move and prepare for his attacks.

Exercise boosts satisfaction with life, researchers find

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Had a bad day? Extending your normal exercise routine by a few minutes may be the solution, according to Penn State researchers, who found that people's satisfaction with life was higher on days when they exercised more than usual.

"We found that people's satisfaction with life was directly impacted by their daily physical activity," said Jaclyn Maher, graduate student in kinesiology. "The findings reinforce the idea that physical activity is a health behavior with important consequences for daily well-being and should be considered when developing national policies to enhance satisfaction with life."

The team examined the influence of physical activity on satisfaction with life among emerging adults ages 18 to 25 years because this population's sense of well-being appears to worsen more quickly than at any other time during adulthood.

"Emerging adults are going through a lot of changes; they are leaving home for the first time and attending college or starting jobs," said Maher. "As a result, their satisfaction with life can plummet. We decided to focus on emerging adults because they stand to benefit the most from strategies to enhance satisfaction with life."

The researchers recruited two groups of college students at Penn State. The first group, consisting of 190 individuals, entered information into a diary every day for eight days. The second group, consisting of 63 individuals, entered information into a secure website every day for 14 days. Both groups answered questions aimed at determining participants' satisfaction with life, physical activity and self-esteem. The personalities of all participants in the first group were assessed at the outset of the study using the Big Five Inventory short form.

For the second group (the 63 individuals who filled out questionnaires online for 14 days), the researchers wanted to further investigate whether physical activity was indeed, the cause of participants' increased satisfaction with life rather than some other factor such as mental health, fatigue, or Body Mass Index.

"Shifts in depression, anxiety and stress would be expected to influence a person's satisfaction with life at any given point in time," said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology. "In addition, fatigue can be a barrier to engaging in physical activity, and a high Body Mass Index associated with being overweight may cause a person to be less satisfied in a variety of ways."

By controlling for these variables, the researchers were able to determine that the amount of physical activity a person undertakes in a particular day directly influences his or her satisfaction with life. Specifically, the team found that by exercising just a little more than usual a person can significantly improve his or her satisfaction with life.

The results appeared online this week in the journal Health Psychology.

"Based on these findings, we recommend that people exercise a little longer or a little harder than usual as a way to boost satisfaction with life," said Conroy.

Big storm scrambles presidential race schedules

(AP) ? The big storm taking aim at the East Coast a little more than a week before the election has scrambled campaign plans, with both candidates canceling events and President Barack Obama moving up his departure for Florida to beat the storm.

In an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy has forced Obama and Republican Mitt Romney to toss out carefully mapped-out itineraries as the candidates work to maximize voter turnout while avoiding any suggestion they were putting politics ahead of public safety. Romney canceled plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to join running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said on "Fox News Sunday," noting that a Monday rally with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.

David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign, said it was impossible to predict how the storm would affect the election but acknowledged it could drive down turnout to Obama's detriment.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," Axelrod said on CNN's "State of the Union." ''And so, to the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

On Saturday, Romney was in Florida speaking of bipartisanship, while Obama tried to nail down New Hampshire's four electoral votes.

The former Massachusetts governor presented himself as a staunch conservative during the Republican primaries but has struck a more moderate tone as he appeals for support from women and independent voters. He promised to "build bridges" with Democrats.

Romney coupled his message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision.

Obama, heading to Florida on Sunday night rather than Monday as first planned, spoke with volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday. "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

Winning the White House takes 270 electoral votes. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that remain too close to call.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees when he led Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama said.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four of the most competitive states: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama canceled appearances in Prince William County, Va., on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy.

He moved the departure for Florida to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning to Washington.

Instead of campaigning in Virginia as scheduled, Romney was set to join Ryan for three stops of his Ohio bus tour. Romney's trip to Florida was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns. But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland.

Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. The Republican nominees, Biden said, "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

BBC News ? Computer science teachers offered cash incentive ...

October 26, 2012 at 5:56 am

Great news that the UK is putting up cash incentives to draw in CS teachers! This move addresses the biggest concern that I have for the CS10K project ? where are we going to get the teachers? What will motivate them to study CS? A cash reward would certainly help.

Isn?t it a little surprising that Facebook, Microsoft, and IBM are being asked to design the training for the new teachers? Why them? Because they have so much experience training teachers? Or teaching people about CS? They may do a wonderful job. It?s just not an obvious set of choices.

High-flying graduates are to be given a ?20,000 golden handshake to train as computer science teachers.

Ministers have asked Facebook, Microsoft and IBM to help design the training for the new teachers.

Education Secretary Michael Gove said current information and communications technology (ICT) teacher training courses would be axed from next year.

The move ?could not be more welcome or more necessary?, said Prof Steve Furber of the Royal Society.

Bombings, clashes leave Syria truce in tatters

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Syrian warplane flattened a three-story building, suspected rebels detonated a deadly car bomb and both sides traded gunfire in several hotspots across the country Saturday, activists said, leaving a U.N.-backed holiday truce in tatters on its second day.

The unraveling of the cease-fire marked the latest setback to ending Syria's civil war through diplomacy. Foreign military intervention is unlikely, raising the grim prospect of a drawn-out war of attrition between President Bashar Assad and those trying to topple him.

The proposed four-day truce during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha had been a long shot from the start since international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi failed to get solid commitments from all combatants. Fighting dropped off in the first hours of the cease-fire Friday, but by the end of the day, activists said 151 people had been killed in bombings and shootings, a standard daily toll in Syria.

On Saturday, the first regime airstrike since the start of the truce reduced a three-story building in the Arbeen suburb of the capital, Damascus to rubble, killing at least eight men, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from activists.

In the remote eastern town of Deir el-Zour, assailants detonated a car bomb near a military police compound, then opened fire at those rushing to the scene, killing a total of eight people and causing extensive damage, the Observatory said. Syrian media denied there were casualties. The attack bore the hallmarks of Jabhat al-Nusra, a radical rebel-allied Islamic group that has rejected the cease-fire.

The Syrian air force also bombed rebel positions Saturday during a fierce battle for control over the main road linking Aleppo, Syria's largest city, with the capital, activists said. Earlier this month, rebels seized Maaret al-Numan, a town along the highway and besieged a nearby military base, disrupting regime supplies to embattled Aleppo. The Syrian air force has responded with sustained bombing raids on area villages.

By late Saturday, at least 76 people had been killed across Syria, including 20 Syrian soldiers, activists said. The Observatory reported deadly regime shelling and sniper attacks in several locations, while Syrian state-media said rebels ambushed a number of military positions.

Military analyst Joe Holliday said neither side has an incentive to halt fighting, noting that rebels have disrupted regime supply routes to the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. "The regime can't accept the current military status quo without a fight and the rebels have no reason to since they believe they have the momentum," said Holliday, a researcher at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington.

Brahimi's spokesman declined comment Saturday on the apparent failure of his initiative. It's not clear what Brahimi's next move could be, since the international community is divided over the Syria conflict that erupted 19 months ago.

Assad allies Russia and China have shielded the regime against harsher U.N. Security Council sanctions, while the rebels' foreign backers have shied away from military intervention.

The U.S., meanwhile, is averse to sending strategic weapons to help the rebels break the battlefield stalemate, fearing they will fall into the hands of militant Islamists, who are increasingly active in rebel ranks. The al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra, for example, is believed to be on the front lines in Aleppo and near Maaret al-Numan.

When Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy, first floated the idea of a holiday truce, he did not say what his long-term plan was. Even a temporary reduction in violence during such a truce would not have been a springboard for talks between Assad and the opposition on ending the war. Syria's opposition says it will only negotiate if Assad resigns, a step the Syrian leader has refused to take.

Some said Brahimi's initiative allowed a paralyzed international community to show briefly that it was doing something to try to end the war that has claimed more than 35,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Doha Center said the truce at least "provides the illusion of movement, that something is being done, that the international community is still trying to find a solution."

The U.S. said Friday that both sides have violated the holiday cease-fire, but singled out the regime. In the previous attempted truce six months ago, the Syrian military violated key provisions, such as withdrawing troops from urban centers, and was widely held responsible for the collapse of the cease-fire.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi on Saturday accused the U.S. of being one-sided. He said Syria remains committed to halting military operations. He said all cease-fire violations were the result of attacks, most of them carried out by organizations that originally rejected the truce, an apparent reference to Jabhat al-Nusra. The spokesman said Syria has sent messages to the U.N. Security Council concerning the violations.

Syrian state media accused the rebels of breaking the truce from the start.

One of the deadliest attacks Friday was a car bomb attack in a residential area of Damascus.

The state-run news agency SANA on Saturday quoted the director of Damascus Hospital, Dr. Adib Mahmoud, as saying the hospital received 15 dead civilians, including eight children, and 92 wounded, among them 65 children. Activists had put the death toll at 11.

Also Saturday, Lebanese broadcaster LBC TV said journalist Fidaa Itani, one of its employees covering Syria's civil war, was detained by the rebels and is being held in the town of Azaz near the Turkish border.

The station quoted a local rebel leader in Azaz, Abu Ibrahim, as saying that rebels suspected Itani after he filmed many videos of rebels operations in Aleppo. Itani's Lebanese cellphone was closed when The Associated Press tried to reach him.

The area also was the site of the May kidnapping of 11 Shiite Lebanese pilgrims who were on their way home from Iran. Two have been released while rebels say they will hold the others until Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group, apologizes to the Syrian people for supporting Assad.

Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select begins slow rollout - Dowd on Drinks ...

Frank Sinatra?s long love affair with blues, broads and booze, as he often phrased it, was well chronicled during the iconic singer-actor?s lifetime. Now, 14 years after his death, his favorite brand of whiskey is honoring him.

Jack Daniel?s Sinatra Select was unveiled this week, the first step in a drawn-out marketing plan.

Sinatra Select, bottled at 90 proof (45% abv), is matured longer than the standard Jack Daniel?s, in ?Sinatra barrels? that have carved interior grooves to expose the whiskey to more wood. That results in a faster maturing spirit.

The new expression will be launched ? with an initial suggested retail price of $150 per 750 ml bottle ? at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas Airport in December. It then will be rolled out to about 200 other airport locations around the world in January.

The marketing plan calls for selling Sinatra Select at the Jack Daniel?s distillery in Lynchburg, TN, beginning in 2013, and eventually being made available in other domestic markets.

Why the delays?

?We hope people will both collect it and consume it,? said Jim Perry, managing director of Brown-Forman Travel Retail. ?The year 2015 will be Frank Sinatra?s 100th birthday. Over the next couple of years, we?ll be building up to that moment.?

Ex-LSU players Mathieu, Jefferson out of jail

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Former LSU football standouts Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Jefferson were released from a Baton Rouge jail Friday after their arrests at Mathieu's apartment on marijuana charges.

Mathieu, who was a one-time Heisman Trophy finalist, played cornerback until he was dismissed from the team in August after reportedly failing a drug test. Quarterback Jefferson has been playing in the Canadian Football League.

They were released along with Derrick Bryant, a former backup safety. A fourth former player arrested in the case, Karnell Hatcher, remained in jail.

Police said Mathieu, 20, of New Orleans, and Jefferson, 22, of St. Rose, La., were booked Thursday at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of simple possession of marijuana.

Hatcher, 22, of Delray Beach, Fla., was booked with second-offense simple possession of marijuana. Bryant, 22, of Lawrenceville, Ga., was booked with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Jefferson's attorney stressed Thursday that "all individuals are presumed innocent" and said he planned to examine the facts of the case.

Baton Rouge police said the arrests came Thursday after officers responded to a complaint about a man attempting to force his way through a security gate at the apartment complex where Mathieu lives. Before officers arrived, a resident let the man, later identified as Jefferson, into the complex and he was seen going into an apartment.

Police said Mathieu answered the door and officers obtained permission to search after smelling marijuana, leading to the arrests.

Officers found a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high grade marijuana, police said in a news release.

None of those arrested have commented publicly on the case. Neither Mathieu nor Bryant had a listed Baton Rouge area phone number. Hatcher remained in jail Friday.

Matthew Vaughn Turns Down X-Men: Days of Future Past

matthew vaughn Matthew Vaughn Will Not Direct X Men: Days Of Future Past

Matthew Vaughn just doesn?t like sequels. After declining to helm the follow up to his hit 2010 film Kick-Ass, the always interesting director has now turned down the chance to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past, a sequel to his 2011 hit X-Men: First Class.

Deadline reports that the studio is looking to replace Vaughn with Bryan Singer, who launched the original X-Men franchise. Not a bad choice and if they go ahead with it, Singer, who was the producer on First Class, will move into the director?s chair for Days of Future Past?and Vaughn will take his seat in the producer?s chair.

Vaughn fans fear not though, as the director reportedly has another project for Fox titled Secret Service, which is an adaptation of, you guessed it, a Mark Millar comic book. This guy is just showing up everywhere in Hollywood these days, eh?

A July 18th, 2014 release date is set for X-Men: Days of Future Past with key cast members Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence all set to return.

Not too long ago Fox had to replace Rupert Wyatt on the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel. They ended up settling on Matt Reeves, not a bad choice. So whether it?s Singer or someone else at the helm of X-Men: Days of Future Past, you can be sure that the film will be in good hands.

What do you think of this news? Sad to see?Matthew Vaughn go?

Vikings to run over Bucs

Washington Redskins v New York GiantsGetty Images

Week Seven was a very lucky week for yours truly.? With an unlucky 13 games on the schedule, I got 12 of them correct, with only a late comeback from the Titans blocking an unprecedented piece of perfection.

More importantly, MDS and I disagreed on three games.? Thanks to the Cowboys, Saints, and Colts, my two-game season-to-date lead has been extended to five games.

For the year, I?m now 67-37, and MDS is 62-42.

MDS will join Thursday?s PFT Live to discuss this week?s picks.? There will be no gloating.

At least not by him.

Buccaneers at Vikings

MDS?s take: After I was burned by picking the Bucs last week on the way to going 0-for-3 on games where I disagreed with Florio, I?m playing it safe this week. Tampa Bay still looks to me like a team that?s headed in the right direction, but right now the Vikings have too much for the Bucs on both sides of the ball and should win this one comfortably.

MDS?s pick: Vikings 27, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings get a chance to show how different they are this year against one of the teams to whom the Vikings blew a big halftime lead last year.? This time, if the Vikings are up by 10 or more at the break, look for them to close it out with a defense that finally is good enough to hold leads.

Florio?s pick:? Vikings 21, Buccaneers 19.

Panthers at Bears

MDS?s take: Cam Newton is going to bounce back from this slump he?s in eventually. He?s too talented not to. But the Bears are the wrong team for a young quarterback to bounce back against. Chicago?s relentless pressure will force a few turnovers and lead to another loss for the Panthers.

MDS?s pick: Bears 20, Panthers 10.

Florio?s take:? Rattled by the ouster of G.M. Marty Hurney, racked by injuries, and reeling from the sad-sack demeanor of Cam Newton, the Panthers are poised to get plastered.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 31, Panthers 10.

Chargers at Browns

MDS?s take: The Chargers have had two weeks to lick their wounds after that disastrous Monday night meltdown against the Broncos. They?ll come in to Cleveland focused and motivated and win this one comfortably.

MDS?s pick: Chargers 31, Browns 17.

Florio?s take:? If Mike Holmgren?s current team can knock off the Chargers, the Chargers could be Mike Holmgren?s next team.? Though a house-cleaning could still be coming, the Chargers will likely do enough to reverse a bad two weeks of blown leads and stickum, allegedly.

Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Browns 17.

Seahawks at Lions

MDS?s take: Mistakes keep killing the Lions, whether it?s penalties, turnovers or special teams coverage breakdowns. If the Lions could get out of their own way they could go on a run down the stretch and still contend for a wild card berth, but that doesn?t look likely at this point. Seattle is the team that looks like a playoff contender, and the Seahawks will take another step in that direction with a win on the road.

MDS?s pick: Seahawks 17, Lions 14.

Florio?s take:? If this one were set for Seattle, it would be a no brainer.? In Detroit, the Seahawks have an opportunity to prove that they?re capable of beating better-than-bad teams in a place other than CenturyLink Field.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 17, Lions 16.

Jaguars at Packers

MDS?s take: In the biggest mismatch of the week, the Jaguars? offense will look even worse than usual without Maurice Jones-Drew, and Aaron Rodgers will have his third consecutive huge game.

MDS?s pick: Packers 34, Jaguars 3.

Florio?s take:? The Packers have never beaten the Jaguars at Lambeau Field.? Then again, these teams have played there only once.? The Jags will want to forget their second trip to town.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 45, Jaguars 21.

Dolphins at Jets

MDS?s take: I?m impressed that the Jets aren?t going down without a fight. When they lost Darrelle Revis and got blown out by the 49ers, I figured the Jets were finished, but they?ve played good football for the last three weeks, even if they have only one win to show for it in those three games. The Jets will beat the Dolphins in a low-scoring game and get back to .500.

MDS?s pick: Jets 13, Dolphins 10.

Florio?s take:? Despite the injuries and the ineffectiveness and the uncertainty, the Jets have improved over the past few weeks.? They?re good enough to complete the sweep of a Dolphins team that has improved even more discreetly.

Florio?s pick:? Jets 30, Dolphins 20.

Falcons at Eagles

MDS?s take: The Eagles know their backs are against the wall, and the Falcons have been scraping by with three straight close wins. This looks to me like the day when the Falcons? luck runs out, and the last unbeaten team in the league gets beaten.

MDS?s pick: Eagles 24, Falcons 21.

Florio?s take:? Andy Reid is 13-0 after the bye week.? Sometimes, there?s no need for elaboration.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 24, Falcons 23.

Redskins at Steelers

MDS?s take: The Steelers took a big step toward the playoffs with last week?s win in Cincinnati, and I like them to keep it going against the Redskins. Look for Steelers tight end Heath Miller to have a big game against the Redskins? defense, just as Giants tight end Martellus Bennett, Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez have in the Redskins? last three games.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 28, Redskins 27.

Florio?s take:? The Steelers are 20-2-1 at Heinz Field against NFC teams.? But Heinz Field has never seen anything like RG3, who?ll run circles around a Polamalu-free Pittsburgh defense.

Florio?s pick:? Redskins 23, Steelers 20.

Patriots at Rams

MDS?s take: The Rams? secondary has been playing well and the Patriots? secondary has been leaving receivers wide open, and I?m tempted to pick the upset for that reason. But with Danny Amendola hurt I don?t think the Rams have the ammunition to take advantage of the Patriots? problems on defense, and I think New England?s running game can churn up yardage at Wembley Stadium and lead the Patriots to a low-scoring win.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 16, Rams 10.

Florio?s take:? The team whose name pays homage to the men who kicked the butts of the Brits like to kick butt in Britain.? Though it won?t be a blowout like it was three years ago against the Bucs, the Pats should be able to build a fourth-quarter lead.? And hold it.? For a change.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Rams 21.

Colts at Titans

MDS?s take: Titans running back Chris Johnson took advantage of a bad Bills defense last week, and he should be able to take advantage of a bad Colts defense this week. Johnson will go for about 150 yards and the Colts? offense won?t be able to keep up.

MDS?s pick: Titans 28, Colts 21.

Florio?s take:? The winner of this one won?t likely challenge the Texans for the division crown but would be very much alive for a wild-card berth.? The Titans continue their knack for playing in ? and winning ? exciting games.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Colts 24.

Raiders at Chiefs

MDS?s take: I?m not a believer in Brady Quinn as the Chiefs? long-term answer at quarterback, but as a short-term fix who won?t turn the ball over as often as Matt Cassel, Quinn should be able to lead Kansas City to a home win over a bad team.

MDS?s pick: Chiefs 20, Raiders 16.

Florio?s take:? Oakland has won five straight times at Arrowhead Stadium.? With an extra week to prepare and everyone on the hot seat, if the Chiefs don?t beat the Raiders at home now, they possibly never will.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 24, Raiders 10.

Giants at Cowboys

MDS?s take: Completing a season sweep of the Giants would go a long way toward getting the Cowboys into playoff contention, but I don?t see it happening. The Cowboys? defense will miss linebacker Sean Lee, Giants quarterback Eli Manning will have a big day, and the Giants will improve to 4-0 all time at Cowboys Stadium.

MDS?s pick: Giants 31, Cowboys 20.

Florio?s take:? The Cowboys aren?t nearly as good as they were in Week One, when they beat the Giants in New Jersey.? The Giants are the same, but this time they won?t get complacent.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 35, Cowboys 27.

Saints at Broncos

MDS?s take: Two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks will be on the field in Denver, but Drew Brees has to play against a good Broncos secondary, while Peyton Manning gets to play against a terrible Saints secondary. Advantage Peyton.

MDS?s pick: Broncos 42, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? When he was the head coach of the Panthers, John Fox held his own against Sean Payton?s Saints.? This time, Fox has a great quarterback ? and the Saints don?t have Payton.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 38, Saints 28.

49ers at Cardinals

MDS?s take: The Cardinals? great start to the season may come to a screeching halt on Monday night.? A home loss to a division rival would be tough for Arizona to overcome, and a win at Arizona will be another step for the 49ers toward establishing themselves as the clear favorites to win the NFC West.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 20, Cardinals 13.

Florio?s take:? Once atop the NFC West, the Cardinals are close to completing their slide to the basement.? Blame it on the lack of a high-end quarterback and an offensive line to protect him.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Cardinals 13.

Energy Drinks | Care2 Healthy Living

In case you needed another reason to nix the energy drinks, the Food and Drug Administration says that five recent deaths may be linked to Monster Energy Drinks.

We know that mixing energy drinks and booze is bad news for your health, but even without the boozy help, those cans of energy drink are still pretty unhealthy. They?re loaded with unhealthy additives like:

  • Sugars. Even energy drinks that taste terrible are loaded with as much sugar as a soda, if not more. Often, the sweetener is high fructose corn syrup.
  • Artificial sweeteners. Diet or lower-calorie energy drinks tend to use sweeteners like aspartame.
  • Artificial flavors and colors. Most energy drinks on store shelves are not made from real juice, so they need chemical flavorings and colorings to make them look and taste more appealing.
  • Stimulants. This is where the immediate health concerns come in. Energy drinks contain caffeine along with a cocktail of other stimulants, like ginseng and taurine. In moderation and on their own, these ingredients aren?t necessarily unhealthy. It?s all about the amounts, and energy drinks contain high doses of stimulants.

On top of the FDA investigation, one family is suing Monster because their 14-year-old daughter died after drinking two cans of their product in a 24-hour period. Monster is doubling down, saying that its product is totally safe and that these charges are all false.

According to Food Safety News:

The lawsuit, filed in California Superior Court in Riverside, said that after drinking two 24-ounce cans of Monster Energy on consecutive days Fournier went into cardiac arrest. She died days later on December 23, 2011 from what the lawsuit said was ?cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity? that complicated a heart disorder she already had.

On Monday, FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess said the agency had received reports of five deaths and one heart attack that may be associated with the Monster Energy drink from 2009 through June this year.

Is drinking a Monster energy drink going to kill you? Probably not, but until the FDA investigation is through, it might be a good idea to get your energy boost elsewhere. On the next page, check out a list of five natural ways to amp up your energy without energy drinks.

After Shark Kills Surfer, Central California Beach Closed

Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base along California's central coast is closed after the death of a 39-year-old man who was attacked by a shark Tuesday while surfing.

The man's death came two years and a day after a shark killed a 19-year-old man along the same stretch of the coast.

Word of Tuesday's attack has prompted the Los Angeles Times to post some shark survival tips:

-- "Swim calmly toward shore."

-- "Don't turn your back on the shark" (you need to know where it is).

-- If the shark gets aggressive, hit its "nose, eyes or gills." That might surprise the shark enough to make it go away.

-- Tell authorities, so that they can warn others.

Obama, Romney pumped for dash to the finish

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) ? Their debates now history, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney on Tuesday open a two-week sprint to Election Day powered by adrenaline, a boatload of campaign cash and a determination to reach Nov. 6 with no would-have, should-have regrets in their neck-and-neck fight to the finish.

From here, the candidates will vastly accelerate their travel, ad spending and grass-roots mobilizing in a race that's likely to cost upward of $2 billion by the time it all ends.

All the focus now is on locking down support in the nine states whose electoral votes are still considered up for grabs: Colorado, Iowa, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin and Virginia. No surprise then, that Obama campaigns Tuesday in Florida and Ohio while Romney heads West to Nevada and Colorado.

Asked Tuesday whether the race comes down to Ohio, Virginia and Florida as some observers have suggested, Vice President Joe Biden described the three as "critically important." He predicted victory in Ohio and Florida ? without mentioning Virginia.

"Look, this is going to be close," Biden said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show. "We always knew at the end of the day this was going to be a close race, no matter who the Republicans nominated."

Neither candidate scored a knockout punch in their third and last debate Monday, as both men reined in the confrontational sniping that had marked their last testy encounter. And though the stated topic this time was foreign policy, both kept circling back to their plans for strengthening the fragile U.S. economy ? Job 1 to American voters.

Closing out their trio of debates, Obama concisely summed up this pivot point in Campaign 2012: "You've now heard three debates, months of campaigning and way too many TV commercials. And now you've got a choice."

The president framed it as a choice between his own record of "real progress" and the "wrong and reckless" ideas of Romney.

Romney countered by sketching "two different paths" offered by the candidates, one of decline under Obama and one of brighter promise from himself.

"I know what it takes to get this country back," he pledged.

With polls showing the race remains incredibly tight, first lady Michelle Obama made a prediction before the candidates left Florida that neither side would dispute: "This election will be closer than the last one ? that's the only guarantee."

Obama made it look easy in 2008. He won 365 electoral votes to 173 for Republican John McCain. And he got 53 percent of the popular vote, to 46 percent for McCain.

With 270 electoral votes needed for victory, Obama at this point appears on track to win 237 while Romney appears to have 191. The other 110 are in the hotly contested battleground states.

The candidates' strategies for getting to 270 are implicit in their itineraries for the next two weeks and in their spending on campaign ads.

Obama and his Democratic allies already have placed $47 million in ad spending across battlegrounds in the campaign's final weeks, while Romney and the independent groups supporting his candidacy have purchased $53 million, significantly upping their buys in Florida, Ohio and Virginia. And both sides are expected to pad their totals.

After Obama and Biden campaign together in Ohio on Tuesday, the president splits off on what his campaign is describing as a two-day "around-the-clock" blitz to six more battleground states. He'll be in constant motion ? making voter calls and sleeping aboard Air Force One as he flies overnight Wednesday from Nevada to Tampa, Fla.

The vice president is midway through a three-day tour of uber-battleground Ohio, and Obama's team contends its best way of ensuring victory is a win there. The campaign says internal polling gives Obama a lead in the Midwestern battleground state, in large part because of the popularity of the president's bailout of the auto industry.

But even if Obama loses Ohio, his campaign sees another pathway to the presidency by nailing New Hampshire, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nevada and Colorado.

Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are picking up the pace of their campaigning as well, and their schedule reflects an overarching strategy to drive up GOP vote totals in areas already friendly to the Republican nominee.

The Denver suburbs. Cincinnati. Reno, Nev. They're places that typically vote Republican, but where McCain fell short of the margins he needed to defeat Obama. To win in all-important Ohio, the GOP nominee must outperform McCain in typically Republican areas.

Romney and Ryan start their two-week dash in Henderson, Nev., then hopscotch to the Denver area for a rally with rocker-rapper Kid Rock and country music's Rodney Atkins at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Then Romney heads back to Nevada, on to Iowa and then east to Ohio for three overnights in a row. By week's end, he's likely to be back in Florida.

The following week brings a significant uptick in Romney's schedule. Aides say he'll touch down in two or three states a day, or hold that many daily events in big states like Florida.

Both candidates are done holding fundraisers ? no doubt a happy thought for the two of them.

But hold on to your wallets: Supporters will still be out there raising money, and there will be plenty of emails asking for cash right up to the finish.

The president began the month with a little less cash available than Romney, but both have impressive sums to blow through in the home stretch: $150 million for Obama and the Democrats, $183 million for Romney and the Republicans.

Immediately after the final debate, Obama pinged his supporters with an email that said simply: "This is in your hands now. Chip in $5 or more, and let's go win."

Republicans are dramatically bumping up ad spending in the biggest battlegrounds: In Florida, their spending this week hit $9.2 million after averaging about $5.8 million over the last four weeks. In Ohio, GOP ad spending jumped to $9.6 million this week from an average of $6.9 million over the last four weeks. Virginia saw a bump up to $7.9 million, compared with about $5.2 million over the last four weeks.

The Obama campaign on Tuesday released a new TV ad touting recent economic gains. "We're not there yet," Obama says in the ad, "but we've made real progress and the last thing we should do is turn back now." The ad will air in New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin and Colorado.

Out on the road, Romney has been demonstrating more confidence than ever. He's started making more impromptu stops at local establishments near campaign rallies, a departure from his typically buttoned-down schedule through the summer. His crowds are bigger and more energized, too. And some voters who've attended his recent rallies say his performance helps them to see Romney as a plausible president ? not just a candidate.

Obama, for his part, has been projecting a looser, more easygoing demeanor as he campaigns, using humor to undercut Romney.

He riffs about his rival's "Romnesia" ? a lighthearted way to drive home his opponent's shifting policy positions.

Both sides are working furiously to lock down every possible early vote, and the results are evident in the 4.4 million people who've already cast ballots.

Obama will detour to Chicago Thursday to make a statement about voting early by becoming the first president to cast his own early ballot.

The country is likely to easily exceed the early voting totals from 2008, when 30 percent of ballots were cast ahead of Election Day, according to Michael McDonald, a George Mason University professor who tracks early voting closely.

In Ohio, McDonald said, numbers are up across the board ? in rural, suburban and urban areas. As many as 45 percent of Ohio voters may cast early ballots, compared with less than 30 percent four years ago, he said. The numbers in North Carolina seem to be shifting in the Republicans' direction, McDonald says, and those in Iowa "seem to confirm polling showing a slight Obama lead" there.

This year's quartet of debates ? three for the presidential candidates and one for the veeps ? started on a friendly note, with Romney wishing Obama and wife Michelle a happy 20th anniversary, but goodwill quickly deteriorated. Both men were at times argumentative and the back-and-forth often shed more heat than light.

Romney started the debate at a disadvantage with a lack of foreign policy experience. But Ryan said former governors have been very effective world leaders.

"Just look back to Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan," Ryan said on "Today." ''What matters is policy doctrine."

Romney came on like gangbusters in the first debate and left a listless Obama reeling as GOP momentum surged. Biden poured it on for the Democrats in his faceoff with Ryan, rolling out a full complement of smirks, eye-rolls and headshakes. Obama himself rebounded in the fractious town-hall debate. Both Obama and Romney were better behaved in their final faceoff, with the president playing up his commander-in-chief credentials to full effect and Romney playing it safe to avoid making mistakes.

From it all ? more than 65,000 words of debate rhetoric ? there was no signature moment that is likely to be remembered much past Election Day.

Horses and Bayonets: President Obama Gives Mitt Romney a Wake-Up Call About Our Military

The last and final presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was just as sharp and barbed as the second townhall debate.

Though the theme of the debate was supposed to center on foreign policy, Romney and Obama just couldn?t help but keep talking about domestic issues like our military spending.

Mitt Romney griped about how the Navy has far fewer ships today than it did 10 years ago.

President Obama, in a masterful death blow, hammered Mitt?s clueless ship counting by pointing out, ?You mention the Navy, for example, and the fact that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets,? Obama said. ?We have these things called aircraft carriers and planes land on them. We have ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.?

Watch President Obama deliver this clobbering line in a clip from the debate below:

Dear Mitt Romney, do not pass go. Do not collect $200. President Obama has snatched the shit out of your salt and pepper toup?e.

That has to be the most epic slice of presidential shade ever.

Watch the throne, y?all.

'Blue' light could help teenagers combat stress

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Adolescents can be chronically sleep deprived because of their inability to fall asleep early in combination with fixed wakeup times on school days. According to the CDC, almost 70 percent of school children get insufficient sleep -- less than 8 hours on school nights. This type of restricted sleep schedule has been linked with depression, behavior problems, poor performance at school, drug use, and automobile accidents. A new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that exposure to morning short-wavelength "blue" light has the potential to help sleep-deprived adolescents prepare for the challenges of the day and deal with stress, more so than dim light.

The study was a collaboration between Associate Professor and Director of the LRC Light and Health Program Mariana Figueiro and LRC Director and Professor Mark S. Rea. Results of the study were recently published in the open access International Journal of Endocrinology. ?

Levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, follow a daily 24-hour rhythm. Cortisol concentrations are low throughout the day reaching a broad minimum in the evening before rising slowly again throughout the night. In addition to this gradual elevation of cortisol at night, cortisol levels rise sharply within the first 30 to 60 minutes after waking. This is known as the cortisol awakening response (CAR). In nocturnal animals, the cortisol spike occurs at night, at the start of activity. It appears to be associated with the time of transition from rest to activity, upon waking. A high CAR has been associated with better preparedness for stressful and challenging activities.

"The present results are the first to show that low levels of short-wavelength light enhance CAR in adolescents who were restricted from sleep," said Figueiro. "Morning light exposure may help to wake up the body when it is time to be active, thus preparing individuals for any environmental stress they might experience."

Short-wavelength light has been shown to maximally suppress production of nocturnal melatonin and phase shift the timing of the biological clock. The effect of short-wavelength light on other biomarkers has not been widely studied.

The study included three overnight sessions, at least one week apart. All participants wore a Dimesimeter on a wrist band to measure light exposure and to verify the regularity of their activity/rest periods during the three-week study. The Dimesimeter is a small calibrated light meter device developed by the LRC that continuously records circadian light and activity levels. During the study, adolescents aged 12 to 17 years went to sleep at 1:30 a.m. and woke up at 6:00 a.m., a 4.5-hour sleep opportunity. Each week, participants either experienced morning short-wavelength blue light (40 lux of 470-nanometer light) or remained in dim light.

"We found that exposure to short-wavelength blue light in the morning significantly enhances CAR in sleep deprived adolescents, more so than dim light," said Rea. "Morning exposure to short-wavelength light may be a simple, yet practical way to better prepare adolescents for the challenges of the day."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Garth Brooks promised he'd be emotional during his Country Music Hall of Fame induction. But the tears started before he made it all the way into the building.

Reflecting on personal heroes George Strait, Bob Seger and James Taylor on hand to salute him Sunday night, Brooks teared up as he spoke with reporters on the red carpet. He only got more emotional as the night went along.

"I moved to this town for one reason and that was to get 'Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old' cut by George Strait," Brooks said before the ceremony as his eyes began to redden. "That's what George is singing tonight. It's gonna be so cool. I'm a fan. So I get to be a fan tonight."

Brooks was inducted along with trailblazing singer Connie Smith and keyboard player Hargus "Pig" Robbins, whose rolling signature sound has adorned countless hits across the radio dial.

It was a night studded with stars. Strait, Seeger and Taylor played for Brooks, dubbed "the mighty Garth" by Robbins. Lee Ann Womack, the Quebe Sisters and The Whites saluted Smith. Merle Haggard provided her induction speech.

Ronnie Dunn serenaded Robbins with a version of George Jones' "White Lightning," the first No. 1 hit Robbins played on in 1959, while simultaneously drinking moonshine from a Mason jar. Ronnie Milsap, who like Robbins is blind, joked "Pig and I are driving home tonight," before joining Robbins on "Behind Closed Doors."

Robbins is one of the most widely recorded session players in Nashville history, though his reputation spread far beyond Music City's borders. From Jones and most of his country contemporaries to rock 'n' roll pioneers like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and J.J. Cale, he worked with some of the most dynamic artists in music history. His sound defines some of pop music's most memorable songs as well, which Crystal Gayle reminded everyone by singing "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue."

"If we listened to every hit record he played on, none of us would live long enough to make it to the end," Charlie McCoy said during his induction speech for Robbins.

Robbins also played on Smith's early recordings shortly after she arrived in Nashville.

Smith recounted before the show how she won a talent contest in Columbus, Ohio. Bill Anderson heard her sing and less than a year later she had her first hit, "Once a Day," which became the first debut single by a female country artist to reach No. 1. It sat atop the charts for eight weeks.

She inspired a generation of singers just as she was inspired by singers like Jean Shepard and the late Kitty Wells, whom she now joins in the hall of fame.

"Jean Shepard went in last year and she said, 'I hope they hang your plaque next to mine,' and I don't think I could have a better compliment that that," Smith said.

Wherever they decide to hang Brooks' plaque will quickly become the most visited spot in the museum. Selling out stadiums, drawing more than 750,000 fans to Central Park, hosting "Saturday Night Live" and earning his own TV specials, Brooks rose from playing for tips in Oklahoma bars to becoming a pop culture phenomenon who started fashion trends, changed the concert business and is still imitated endlessly despite a decade of semi-retirement.

Name just about any trophy, lifetime achievement award or honorific, and Brooks can claim ownership. He balked, though, when informed he'd be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last spring because of all the greats he thinks should go in ahead of him. But there's no denying Brooks' place in not only country music history, but American pop music as well. The third best-selling artist in U.S. history with more than 128 million albums sold, he helped take an oft-maligned genre of music to the world.

As Strait said during his induction of Brooks: "He blew it up, man."

And fans are still breathless in his company. Hundreds lined up outside the hall of fame in anticipation of the 50-year-old singer's arrival with wife Trisha Yearwood, holding signs and cheering. The shouts were just as loud during the ceremony.

Brooks gave a speech that included thanks to friends, family and industry professionals who helped him along the way. And he told the story of how Taylor, Seeger and Strait affected him at the points they entered his life. He remembered hearing Strait for the first time while visiting home after his freshman year in college.

"Unwound" came on the radio and it changed everything.

"From that point forward I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life," Brooks said. "I wanted to be George Strait so bad, man. And I have to say now, 20 years in the business under my own name, thank you very much, I still want to be George Strait so damn bad."
