Wasteland 2 Kickstarter May Start an Admirable Trend ...

The Wasteland 2 Kickstarter has already more than exceeded its goal of $900,000. With 25 days still to go, it?s approaching $1.5 million in pledges, a figure which will ensure the game lands on Mac and Linux in addition to PC. It?s nice to see a game like Wasteland that is nearly 25 years old get the opportunity for a sequel thanks to a new method of funding, but this particular Kickstarter may result in more than just a (very) long-awaited sequel being made.

The latest update on the Kickstarter, written by inXile boss Brian Fargo, recounts a story of how Fargo was kind to a young neighbor of his 20 years ago. He used this as the launching point to talk about a Kickstarter initiative he?d like to help start which he is calling Kick It Forward.

?And speaking of goodwill it occurs to me that we can harness the power of Kickstarter in a more meaningful way,? Fargo wrote. ?Fan funding is bigger than me or Wasteland 2 as I have remarked before. The development community has come together to support us in ways that I didn?t think possible and our power as developers will ultimately come from us sticking together.?

Noting that ?both gamers and developers have so much more strength than they realize,? he said he will be pledging money made by his Kickstarter-funded game to future Kickstarters. This won?t be money that fans have donated ? there?s no need to worry about seeing your money go to a project other than Wasteland 2 if you pledge. Instead 5 percent of profits generated by Wasteland 2, tentatively set for release in late 2013, will be sent to other Kickstarter developers.

The details of how other projects would be selected or what would happen if they fail to reach their targets were not shared. There is plenty of time for those details to be worked out, though, and in the meantime Fargo said he would have a badge created which other Kickstarter projects can make use of to indicate they will also pledge a portion of their future profits to other Kickstarters.

?Imagine the potential if another Minecraft comes along via Kickstarter and produces millions of dollars of investment into other developers,? Fargo said. ?This economic payback will continue to grow the movement way beyond the current system. I hope others will join me with this idea and make this a true shakeup.?

It?s hard not to like this idea ? any project which succeeds on Kickstarter is doing so because of the fans? support; there would be no profit to speak of in the first place if not for the generosity of the Kickstarter community. Generally speaking, the games being pitched on the site are a sort that publishers have no interest in (at least not without heavily modifying things so they are no longer true to the creators? vision), so Kickstarter-funded game developers will have that in common and would hopefully want to support others in that position.

While we may not have seen a Kickstarter for a new Shenmue pop up, there are a number of projects that still appear to be worthy of funding. If other developers were to begin kicking in to ensure these games are made, it would only improve the chances of gamers seeing more innovative titles that publishers are unwilling to take a risk on.

US Army debuts app marketplace prototype: iOS first, Android coming soon

The promise of an Army app store has been bandied about for quite a while now, but it looks like it's slowly becoming a reality. The US Army has today officially announced a prototype of the Army Software Marketplace, a web-based app store that currently includes twelve different training apps that have been approved for Army-wide use. That includes just iOS apps initially, but the Army promises that it will soon include apps for Android devices as well. It's also of course looking to expand considerably beyond those dozen odd apps, noting that the prototype is just "a first step in establishing and exercising new submission and approval processes that will eventually enable Army members, organizations and third-party developers to release applications for Army-wide distribution." And you thought the approval process for some of the current app stores was stringent.

It is perhaps hard to believe that the Apple iPhone has been around for five years. Announced in January 2007 and then shipping in the US during June of that year, the iPhone is one of the most iconic and influential mobile phones ever made.

Apple's involvement in the mobile phone market had been rumoured for years, although Apple largely managed to keep the specifications of?the iPhone as a closely guarded secret before launch. But this wasn't Apple's first attempt to enter this particular market, back in 2005 Apple and Motorola co-operated on the short lived and pretty much universally derided Motorola ROKR.

After its announcement, US customers had to wait a full six months for the iPhone to become available - these days there are only weeks or days between Apple's launch and the devices going on sale. European customers had to wait ten months or more.. and back in those days, Apple's exclusivity deals with carriers meant that the device was restricted to just one carrier per country.

In Europe at least, the iPhone wasn't a huge sales success because not only would most customers have to swap carriers, but it was expensive as well. And then there were the other shortcomings - the iPhone didn't support 3G data, it didn't come with GPS, it couldn't capture video clips and you couldn't remove the battery to replace it, all things that you could do on the rival Nokia N95.

There were also very few applications available for the iPhone. The AppStore didn't launch until mid-2008, and until then it was difficult and clunky for users to get hold of those few apps that were available. Of course, the AppStore changed everything and since its launch has clocked up an incredible 25 billion downloads.

Despite what Apple's lawyers might have you believe, touchscreen smartphones had been around for years by the time the Apple came to the game. For example, the Sony Ericsson P990i was a pretty capable device that came to market in 2006. And although the iPhone did set the pattern for those black slabby devices that we see all over the place, the LG PRADA was announced at almost the same time as the iPhone but came to market months before Apple did.

So how exactly did the Apple iPhone influence what came afterwards? Well, for a start smartphones started to look much sleeker and better designed.. and it showed that?people were prepared to pay for more for a premium product such as this.

The iPhone also popularised the capacitive touchscreen display (used with a finger) over the older resistive type (used with a plastic or metal stylus). It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but if you try going back to a device with a resistive display these days (perhaps an old smartphone or satnav) then you really notice the difference.

The capacitive display also allowed for a completely different type of user interface. Because they are so sensitive, it is possible to lightly brush the screen to ?flick scroll?, or you can use two fingers to ?pinch zoom? and you can easily drag or move objects. The iPhone's user interface was designed to support that, rather than older smartphones that were still trying to be scaled-down desktop operating systems. For example, before the iPhone you used to use desktop-style scroll bars if you wanted to move up and down through a long document.. something that seems quaintly old-fashioned today.

But it is perhaps it is the iPhone's successor, the iPhone 3G which was when the product started to become really useful. The second-generation iPhone added 3.5G support and GPS, and along with it came the AppStore which opened up a mass of applications to users. By the time the iPhone 3G was launched, Apple could be reasonably assured that they would have a success on their hands given the good reception that the original iPhone had.

Five years later the original iPhone is a fading memory, having contributed relatively few sales to the total of around 175 million handsets that Apple has shipped. But if the iPhone had?never launched, would the mobile phone market look like it does today? We suspect that it wouldn't!

Meanwhile, industry officials insist that a limit of five SIMs per operator would be more reasonable, given the number of SIM-enabled devices available to consumers. What's most clear, though, is that Vietnam is awash in marketing opportunity -- just imagine how popular Nokia could be with a mobile phone that supports 18 SIM cards.

The D800 JPEG (on the left) appears to be the noisier of the two, which seems logical, considering that Nikon opted to boost the camera's resolution instead of its sensitivity. Still, the cam's top-ISO is quite usable, and if you plan to shoot in a studio setting or can live without a six-digit sensitivity, the D800 will likely suit you just fine. Charges in Afghan shootings expected within a week

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Charges against an American soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians are expected to be filed within a week and if the case goes to court the trial will be held in the United States, said a legal expert with the U.S. military familiar with the investigation.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is suspected of leaving a U.S. base in southern Afghanistan, entering homes and gunning down nine children, four men and three women before dawn on March 11. Bales, a 38-year-old married father of two from Lake Tapps, Washington, is currently being held at a U.S. military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

The shootings have further strained ties between the U.S. government and President Hamid Karzai who has accused the U.S. military of not cooperating with a delegation he appointed to investigate the killings in Panjwai district of Kandahar province. The Afghan investigative team also is not convinced that one soldier could have single-handedly left his base, walked to two villages, shot and killed 16 civilians and set fire to some of their bodies.

Syed Mohammad Azeen, a tribal elder from Balandi village, said Sunday in Kandahar that he and other villagers believe more than a dozen soldiers were involved. Other villagers said they saw 16 to 20 U.S. troops in the villages. It's unclear whether the soldiers the villagers saw were part of a search party that left the base to look for Bales, who was reported missing.

Allegations that 16 to 20 people were involved in the killings are "completely false," according to a U.S. official familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.

Karzai seemed to endorse the skepticism about the U.S. account of a single shooter when he met with relatives of the victims in Kabul on Friday in a meeting covered by the news media. He recounted a story from one of the families about women and children being killed in four different rooms of a house, dragged into one room and lit on fire.

"That, one man cannot do," said Karzai.

Many other officials and villagers have said it seemed impossible for a single soldier to carry out the attacks in both villages ? one 1 kilometer north of the base and the other 1.5 kilometers south of the base. But the timeline is unclear. Some villagers have said the attacks, which they claim started around 2:30 a.m., occurred at separate times over an hour. Others have said attacks occurred simultaneously in the two villages.

In an attempt to prove there was only one perpetrator involved in the shootings, the U.S. military has shown Afghan officials footage from a surveillance video that shows a soldier walking up to the base, laying down his weapon and raising his arms in surrender.

Karzai said Friday that the video, which was shot by an aerial blimp above the base, was "not convincing" and accused the U.S. of not cooperating with Afghan investigators.

The legal expert, who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case, insisted that there had been good cooperation between U.S. and Afghan investigative teams and that Afghan officials had provided important evidence for the case.

The military denied the Afghan team's request to interview Bales because that would have violated his rights as an accused in the case, the U.S. official said.

The expert also said that U.S. officials were discussing the best way to compensate the relatives of the victims and those wounded.

Military officials have said that there were no operations being conducted in the immediate area around the time of the pre-dawn killings. Helicopter noises that villagers heard could have been Medevac choppers called in to evacuate five Afghan civilians injured in the shootings, the official said.

Three of the injured who were flown to Kandahar Air Field were under 10, the official said. It was the second time that one of the children had been treated at the air field for a gunshot wound, the official said.

Villagers from the area also have alleged that women were sexually assaulted during the rampage.

The U.S. official said there was no evidence at this time that any of the women were raped.

Azeen, the trial elder, agreed, saying "Whoever is saying that should be ashamed."

The legal expert said charges were still being decided and that the location for any trial had not yet been determined. If the suspect is brought to trial, it is possible that Afghan witnesses and victims would be flown to the United States to participate, he said.

He declined to disclose details about the investigation, which is being conducted by the Army Criminal Investigation Division.

Army Brig. Gen. Lewis Boone, director of public affairs for the U.S.-led coalition and American forces in Afghanistan, called the shooting spree a "terrible and horrendous act," but said the U.S. military could not jeopardize the case by disclosing details of the investigation.

"I cannot over emphasize enough how important it is in the U.S. judicial system that the facts of the case, the evidence and the circumstances are safeguarded to ensure proper judicial process," Boone said. "Whether you are an Afghan or an American, I think you'll agree that the most important thing at the end of the day is that justice be done."

In Washington, Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States said Sunday that he believes the alleged shooter will be brought to justice.

But Eklil Hakimi indicated that relations between the two nations have been frayed by the shootings and violent protests across Afghanistan that broke out after Qurans were burned at a U.S. military base. The two nations also are engaged in tense negotiations on a strategic partnership agreement that will govern the U.S. footprint in the country after most combat forces pull out by the end of 2014.

The ambassador told CNN's "State of the Union" that Afghanistan was working to define its relationship with the U.S. for the years to come, but acknowledged that "down the road, it's a bumpy road."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? George Clooney and his father were arrested Friday during a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy, and the actor said he has asked President Barack Obama to engage China on stopping a humanitarian crisis in northern Africa.

The protesters accuse Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of provoking a humanitarian crisis and blocking food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains in the county's border region with South Sudan.

Clooney, his father, Nick Clooney, and others were arrested after being warned three times not to cross a police line outside the embassy. Those taken into custody included NAACP President Ben Jealous, Martin Luther King III, and actor and comedian Dick Gregory.

Several members of Congress also were arrested, including Massachusetts Reps. James McGovern and John Olver, Texas Rep. Al Green and Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia. They were handcuffed and placed into a U.S. Secret Service van.

Clooney was released several hours later after paying a $100 fine.

The arrests came after Clooney met this week with Obama, testified in the Senate and attended a state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Clooney told The Associated Press before he was arrested that he can only hope to draw attention to the crisis in Sudan but that he doesn't know if any progress has been made. He said he was impressed, though, with Obama's engagement on the issue.

"It's amazing to sit down with a world leader who knows all of the intricacies of what's going on in Sudan," he said.

The actor said he asked Obama to involve China more in pushing for a solution in Sudan. A YouTube video Clooney recently posted online from his trip to Sudan appears to show a Chinese-made missile being used against the Nuba community.

Clooney said international leaders need to "follow the money" flowing to Sudan's leaders to expose corruption.

"This is a moment where we have a chance to do something because if we don't, in the next three to four months, there's going to be a real humanitarian disaster," Clooney said before his arrest. The situation is urgent, he said, because the upcoming rainy season would block transportation of food aid to the area.

Clooney said he didn't know if his actions would make a difference but that he at least wanted to make more people aware.

"It's such a silly thought to think you're actually succeeding in any of this," he said. "But if it's loud enough and you keep making it loud enough at the very least people will know about it, and you can't say we didn't know. That's the first step."

In the last quarter of 2011, worldwide, there were 28.2 million tablets shipped, an increase of 155 percent from the last quarter of 2010, according to IDC's?ccording to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker.

"The market experienced stronger-than-expected growth across many regions and at many price points, leading to a full-year 2011 total of 68.7 million units," IDC said. "Based upon the markets' strong 2011 finish, and the clear demand expected in 2012, IDC has increased its 2012 forecast to 106.1 million units, up from its previous forecast of 87.7 million units."

And, "despite an impressive debut by Amazon, which shipped 4.7 million Kindle Fires into the market, Apple continued to see strong growth in the quarter, shipping 15.4 million units in 4Q11, up from 11.1 million units in 3Q11. That represents a 54.7 percent worldwide market share (down from 61.5 percent in 3Q11)."

While the Android-based Kindle Fires put Amazon in the No. 2 spot, with 16.8 percent of the worldwide market, third-place went to Android-using Samsung, which grew from 5.5 percent in the third quarter of last year to 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011.

"Amazon's widely-reported entry into the media tablet market with a $199, 7-inch product seemed to raise consumers' awareness of the category worldwide despite the fact that the Fire shipped almost exclusively in the U.S. in the fourth quarter," said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices, in an IDC press release.

Tablets of all shapes and sizes sold well, he said, from Apple's "premium-priced iPads (which start at $499) .... to Pandigital's line of Android-based, entry-level tablets (which start at $120). "

IDC said it expects Android to continue to "grow its share of the market at the expense of iOS," Apple's mobile operating system.

"As the sole vendor shipping iOS products, Apple will remain dominant in terms of worldwide vendor unit shipments," Mainelli said. "However, the sheer number of vendors shipping low-priced, Android-based tablets means that Google's OS will overtake Apple's in terms of worldwide market share by 2015. We expect iOS to remain the revenue market share leader through the end of our 2016 forecast period and beyond."

For now, Apple is seeing record pre-orders for the new iPad, said another firm, Canaccord Genuity analysts, with?wait times for shipping are estimated at two to three weeks.?

Based on the huge interest, Canaccord Genuity?raised its iPad sales estimate for 2012 to 65.6 million from 55.9 million, and to 90.6 million from 79.7 million for 2013.
