YORK, Maine ? Pink paper lanterns, pink balloons and pink flamingos adorned the York Golf and Tennis Clubhouse on Thursday.

Many guests also wore pink at the first Think Pink! event to benefit the York Hospital Breast Care Center's Living Well program. The evening was a prelude to the Santa's Got a Brand New Bag event by the hospital's Women's Committee, coming up in November. A total of $17,800 was raised through ticket sales and raffles, and 120 people attended.

"We wanted to do something new this year," said committee member Leslie Ware. "All the proceeds from tonight's event will go to the Living Well fund."

Living Well helps women navigating the journey from diagnosis to treatment of breast cancer, and centers on the mind, body and well-being of the patient.

"It's really women helping women," said committee member Polly Stanwood. "We just helped one (newly diagnosed) woman with grocery and gas cards."

The program helps with emergency assistance for women and their families who may be struggling financially during breast cancer treatment.

There also are programs for pre-operative Reiki to reduce stress, massage therapy, meditation, creativity and exercise, including yoga, as well as nutritional guidance, self-care and a facilitated breast cancer support group.

To date, the committee has raised almost $200,000 for the Living Well program.

The York Hospital Women's Committee is now in its 81st year, and to date it has raised more than $600,000 for the purchase of medical equipment, renovations of patient areas and the support of many additional hospital programs.

Guests on Thursday were treated to appetizers, desserts and dancing at the Think Pink! event, and they participated in raffles for tote bags filled with gourmet treats and other items donated by Women's Committee members.

Nurses from the Breast Care Center were at the event, including Crystal Butler, a 33-year employee of the hospital. She was sitting with Dr. Amanda Lewis, a breast radiologist.

"Our department makes it easier for a woman to have a mammography reading as soon as it's done," Lewis said. "It alleviates the waiting and anxiety."

The department has two dedicated breast radiologists.

"We can also do an ultrasound or further testing at the same appointment, so the patient doesn't have to come back again," Butler said.

Some Think Pink! guests brought brand new handbags to be auctioned at the Santa's Got a Brand New Bag event, which will be held Nov. 15 at the Portsmouth Harbor Events and Conference Center.

The live auction, which also will benefit the Living Well program, will include a Kate Spade handbag as well as signed handbags from Oprah Winfrey's personal collection.

Advance tickets are $65 and VIP tables of 10 are $800. For tickets, visit www.yorkhospital.com, e-mail fr@yorkhospital.com or call (207) 351-2385.
