There is reportedly "blood in the water" around the FTC investigation of Google that could give its rivals their best shot at challenging the search giant, according to a report out of Washington.
Google's rivals have their best shot in a long time at taking business from the search giant if the Federal Trade Commission sues for antitrust violations.
That is what All Things Digital quotes one person as saying, describing the source as being from the nation's capitol and as being familiar with the ongoing FTC probe.
"There's now blood in the water. All these people who have wanted to kill Google, this is their chance. They will never have a better opportunity than the next 30 days," All Things D reports.
Bloomberg reported last week that the FTC has given Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) a matter of days to come up with an acceptable settlement or face civil antitrust action.
The FTC reportedly is looking into whether Google has ranked its own services higher than those of competitors, signed exclusive agreements to provide search services to online publishers or made it difficult for advertisers to compare data about campaigns running on rival sites.
Search and the advertising connected to it generate most of Google's fast-growing revenue, and the company appears loathe to agree to anything that will slow that down.
In its most recent quarter, Google posted a 51 percent jump in revenue to $11.33 billion, which nonetheless fell short of the 58 percent increase expected by analysts, sending its stock down.
The average cost per click paid to Google also fell 15 percent from a year ago offset by a 33 percent increase in the number of paid clicks on Google ads.
